Why do we “stitch” hardwood flooring instead of making one straight cut?

This is called stitching in a repair or replacement. Rather than cutting the old floor in a straight line, we weave each new board into the existing hardwood one plank at a time.

Why? Because it creates a seamless transition that looks like the floor was always there. Once everything is sanded, stained, and finished, those staggered joints disappear into the rest of the floor, making the repair far stronger and far less noticeable than a simple butt joint.

It’s one of those details most people will never notice, which is exactly the goal.
