One of our favorite things about custom built-ins is watching them become part of a family’s story.

These built-ins are part of our High Drive Project, and while we designed them to become part of the home’s architecture, over the years they’ll become something even better.

Soon they’ll hold favorite books, family photos, keepsakes from travels, and little reminders of a life well lived.

Those are the things that turn a beautiful room into a home, and that’s our favorite part of what we do.

The carriage house.

One of my favorite things about old homes is learning how people used to live.

Our home was built in 1905, long before garages were common. Like many homes of that era, it had a carriage house where horse-drawn carriages, harnesses, and often horses were kept.

Today, it’s home to Putney Building Company—our office and design studio. Renovating it has been one of our favorite projects because we were able to preserve its history while giving it a new purpose.

Every day we come to work, I find myself thinking about everything this building has seen over the last 100+ years and the life it had long before we were here. It’s pretty special that we get to be a small part of its story now.

One of our favorite details in the Tudor kitchen isn’t something we built—it’s something we were able to keep.

The tall cabinet beside the sink is the home’s original baking cabinet, complete with cast iron cooling racks. Rather than replacing it, we painted it and designed all of the new cabinetry around it so it still feels like it belongs exactly where it has for decades.

Paired with the original steel windows and a farmhouse sink, this corner is a reminder that the best remodels don’t erase a home’s history—they build on it.

We wanted this space in the High Drive kitchen to feel like it had always been part of the home.

Instead of treating it as just another cabinet wall, we leaned into the home’s architecture by repeating the arches found throughout the house. It’s a subtle detail, but one that makes this custom beverage station feel like it has always belonged.

It’s those thoughtful decisions that help a remodel honor a home’s history while making it work for the way people live today. That’s always our goal—to create spaces that feel timeless, functional, and true to the character of the home.

Sometimes the smallest room in the house is the one people remember.

The dark walls, the custom marble basin, an antique mirror and pendant we’ll never know the full story of.

This little powder room is part of our own carriage house - and it’s one of our favorite spaces we’ve ever built. Proof that you really don’t need square footage to create something special.

Before this hood was built, it started with a pencil.

We still sketch many of our custom details by hand. There is something about pencil on paper that slows the process just enough to really think through the proportions, the details, and how each piece belongs.

We love technology, but we’ll always have a soft spot for the old-fashioned way of creating.

Every once in a while we get the opportunity to work on a house that is incredibly special, and this was one of those homes.

This was one of the most original houses we’ve ever remodeled, with so many beautiful details still intact. Our goal was never to change what made it special—it was to preserve it. We kept the original footprint and thoughtfully updated every space while staying true to the home’s history and character.

What makes this project even more meaningful is the family who now calls it home. They love this house as much as we do and are committed to restoring and preserving it over time. We couldn’t be happier knowing it’s in such good hands and feel incredibly grateful to have been part of its story. 🤍
