Hypoxylon canker and oak wilt

Both fatal fungal diseases that affect oak trees, but they have different causes and behaviors. Hypoxylon canker is an opportunistic disease targeting drought-stressed trees, whereas oak wilt is an aggressive vascular pathogen that actively spreads from tree to tree through root grafts and insects.Cause and SpreadHypoxylon Canker: Caused by the fungus Biscogniauxia atropunctata. It lives latently in many trees and only turns aggressive when a tree suffers severe environmental stress, like a major drought. It does not actively jump to healthy, unstressed trees.Oak Wilt: Caused by the fungus Bretziella fagacearum. It actively moves through the water-conducting tissues of the tree and spreads aggressively across landscapes via sap-feeding beetles or underground through connected root systems (root grafts).Symptoms and IdentificationHypoxylon Canker:Upper canopy thinning, small leaves, and branch dieback progressing downward.Bark sloughs off in large patches.Exposes distinct, large crust-like fungal mats (stroma) that change from brown or gray to a prominent ashy black.Oak Wilt:Rapid leaf discoloration (bronzing or yellowing from the edges inward).Sudden wilting and defoliation, often dropping leaves while they are still green or partially green.Spreads rapidly through red oak groups (killing trees in weeks to months), while white oaks decline more slowly. Does not feature the large black peeling fungal crusts characteristic of Hypoxylon.Management and PreventionHypoxylon Canker:No chemical cure exists.Prevent by reducing tree stress through deep watering during dry spells and avoiding root damage.Remove severely infected, structurally unstable trees to prevent safety hazards.Oak Wilt:Management requires professional intervention, including chemical injections (like propiconazole) for high-value trees and physical root trenching to stop underground spread between neighboring trees.Avoid pruning oaks during high-risk periods (spring/early summer) when sap it at it highest.

Can you spot the signs and tell the difference between oak will and Hypoxylon canker?

⚡️⚡️Lightning strikes and Live Oaks ⚡️⚡️

When lightning strikes a mature live oak, the extreme heat (up to 60,000°F) instantly boils the water beneath the bark, causing the bark to explode off the trunk and splitting the wood. Why Live Oaks Get Struck Height and Prominence: Their large canopies and tall, spreading structures make them natural targets in open landscapes. Deep Root Systems: Extensive root networks act as efficient conductive pathways to ground the electrical charge.

High Water Content: Active sap and moisture inside the trunk make hardwoods like oaks highly conductive compared to the surrounding air.
The Damage, The Path: Lightning often spirals down the trunk along the cambium (the living inner bark), leaving a vertical gash or stripped section.

Explosion Effect: Superheated steam expands instantly, blasting away bark and shattering internal wood fibers.

Secondary Threats: The open wound leaves the tree vulnerable to fungal decay, wood-boring insects, and diseases like oak wilt.
Survival and CareSurvival Odds: Users on BigTreeSeekers share mixed opinions, noting that while severe cambium loss can be fatal, many oaks do survive and compartmentalize the wound over time if the damage isn't total.

Immediate Steps: Provide deep supplemental watering during dry spells, prune away strictly dead or broken hanging limbs, and avoid heavy immediate fertilization.

Prevention: arborists can install lightning protection systems featuring copper air terminals and grounding cables to safely divert strikes away from historic or high-value trees.

Take a look at Proper Palm Pruning 🌴

**The 3 o'Clock to 9 o'Clock Rule: Live, healthy fronds that sit at or above a horizontal plane (180^\circ, or the 3 and 9 position on a clock face) should never be removed. Only remove fronds that drop below horizontal.
**No "Hurricane Cuts": Severe over-pruning (often called hurricane cuts, pencil-topping, or rooster-tailing) leaves only a few upward-facing fronds. This practice severely weakens the trunk, causes nutrient deficiencies, and actually makes the palm more vulnerable to storm damage.

Is your tree hiding storm damage?

After heavy rain, trees can look fine and still have hidden problems. Split limbs and cracked trunks can turn urgent fast if nobody checks them early.

A quick inspection now can help catch the risk before it becomes a bigger, costlier issue.

Sometimes we have to work in the rain to make sure that a client's house is safe. This Laurel Oak had a large leader break off about 30 feet up and smash the fence and almost take out the house. When these Laurel Oaks become mature you should have them check yearly for structural defects weak branches, mushroom or fungal growths. These oaks are prone to failure. We tried to repair his fence the best of our ability so that his dog would not get out .Because at Barto Stumps and trees we care about homeowners and thier worries
