Tankless water heaters are great, but there are a few things every homeowner should understand BEFORE making the switch!
💧 INSTANT HOT WATER? NOT EXACTLY.
Tankless heaters provide continuous hot water within their rated capacity, but that water still has to travel through your plumbing to reach the faucet. A recirculation system can reduce the wait, and yes, traditional tank heaters can have those too!
🔥 IT’S NOT ALWAYS A SIMPLE SWAP.
A typical natural gas tank heater uses around 40,000 BTUs per hour. Many whole-home tankless units can demand 180,000–199,000 BTUs per hour!
That means your gas system, venting, and other installation requirements need to be evaluated before converting.
⚡ WHAT ABOUT POWER OUTAGES?
Here’s one that surprises homeowners!
Traditional gas tank heaters with standing pilots don’t require electricity. Gas tankless heaters do! Their electronic controls and ignition systems need power to operate.
No power? No hot water from your tankless unless you have a compatible backup power source.
💰 WILL IT SAVE YOU MONEY?
Tankless systems typically cost more upfront, especially when retrofitting an existing home. While they can be more energy-efficient, the savings don’t always justify the additional installation cost.
SO, WHICH IS BETTER?
