We have seen this from Bella Vista to Fayetteville. Some hit harder than others.

Just a reminder of what most people already know, but we had significant winter injury of plants this past winter. In Northwest Arkansas, most of what we have seen come through the UAEX Plant Health Clinic has been on boxwood, holly, yew, laurels, and some azalea.

Most of our specialist agree that for some of these plants we are still waiting to see the extent of damage to know how to prune these plants back, or whether it is time to start over. A scratch test can be performed on shoots to see if there is green tissue just under the bark on the cambium. If it's brown and brittle, the tissue is dead.

Often plants that seem entirely dead will send up shoots from the roots which often are not killed during the freezing temperatures. It can be a like starting over but at least provides a management decision to regrow from the root or replant.

These freezing temps went pretty far south this year, even into Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia. In central and southern Arkansas, specialists and agents have also reported significant injury on loropetalum, camelia, and gardenia. Another good reminder that NWA is too far north for those plants.
