We're celebrating our 2026 accomplishments this week!

We are thankful for this crew of medical students from SIU School of Medicine (and stalwart volunteer Robert), joining us for their Day of Service on Saturday. We got so much done! We made good progress on harvesting useful compost, which we spread on the strawberry patches and in the personal plots. We also got the greenhouse cleaned up (ribbon cutting soon!), straightening up what is inside, w**d whacking, and putting a decent amount of rock around the drainage pipe.

Students cleared the materials away from our materials corral in anticipation of some tree cutting work, while also cutting trees and w**ds out of the east fenceline, and w**d whacking the south fenceline. They also w**ded the pollinator patches and winterized the rain barrel. We're in great shape for winter!

Congratulations to Salem, our September Storybook Contest winner! Salem will receive two free passes to Kidzeum.

This concludes our 2026 Storybook Contest, on loan to us from Williamsville Public Library and Museum. We appreciate their loan of storyboards the last few years to add a little more excitement to our children's activities at the garden! Thanks also to Kidzeum for sponsoring 2 free passes to each month's winner!

We've been asked to help spread the word about Memorial Health's Community Health Survey. It's a quick survey that helps Memorial identify YOUR priorities when it comes to individual and community health. If you feel that having the benefits of a community garden are helping you and your community to be healthier, please let them know!

This is 170 cloves of garlic ready to go in the ground this week, from garlic we saved from our harvest earlier this summer. We're very excited about our prospects for harvesting next year!

Our partnership with Individual Advocacy Group (IAG) was a success in 2026! Individuals enrolled with IAG have intellectual disabilities and often behavioral challenges. Educational Coordinator Alana Reynolds offered programming three times each week from May through September, with an emphasis on gardening, food, and socializing.

Seventeen individuals took part this summer, with 148 total engagements. The weather was a challenge, with some days being rained out while others were just too hot to enjoy. But when classes were held, individuals had a wonderful time!

This educational opportunity was funded by the garden through sponsorships. We'd like to thank Kumler Outreach Ministries, Memorial Health, HSHS St. Johns, Dominican Sisters, Scheels, Ryan Electric, John Shafer and Associates, and Bank of Springfield for sponsoring the garden in 2026. These unrestricted funds help out in ways that grants often cannot, and provide a way to fund spontaneous collaborations, such as our partnership with IAG.

We’re happy to announce that 54 individual children took part in our children’s programming in 2026!

Our Education Coordinator, Alana Reynolds, led Kids Fare Garden Club, which took place in our children’s garden from May through August, as well as Eat A Rainbow, a 10-week series of ecology classes.

Many thanks to Dr. John Flack of SIU School of Medicine, who funded our children’s programming in 2026!
