Our forefathers built to last. This house was built in 1742 (!), dismantled in the mid-seventies (the 1970s), and reassembled in a new location.
Unfortunately the "new" decking used here was only good for 50 years.

All new lumber was painted on all sides after cutting, to protect against water damage, then a top-coat on everything.
I have no illusions about my work lasting for more than 280 years, but 50 years for the repairs...?

These folks had water dripping from the ceiling. Finally traced to a failed drain coming from the apartment above. Quite a mess.
All fixed now, though.

A tale of three holes...
At some point, there was a leak in the shower to the right. One hole, patched with plywood.
The rectangle to the left is the heating/cooling duct. This is the second hole, and one which can't be blocked.
The solution is a new, bigger third hole. Fix that one, then a new floor to cover all the ugly.

It's been a while since I posted, but I have been busy. This was one of the larger jobs. A kitchen remodel in a rental apartment. The pictures say it all.

Stepping directly from the door threshold onto narrow concrete steps to the concrete floor was not a good situation.
The solution was three different stringers, three secure steps to the floor, easy access from the side, and a handrail on the wall.

I hate to say it, but I hear about this kind of thing way too often. A contractor agrees to do a job for someone, and then won't show up to do the work.
This homeowner couldn't get the contractor to come back to finish the job. His last excuse? It was raining.
I showed up. A few hours to match the stain on the cabinets, apply the trim around the window, and seal it with polyurethane. I installed the factory finished toe-kicks, and two small pieces of base molding. Was that so hard?
If the tile contractor won't return to replace the badly done pieces around the outlet (see picture), the homeowner will have me take care of it.
I will show up to do the work I agreed to do, and I won't walk away from badly done work, like the tile.
Yes, I want to be paid for my work, but my integrity is more valuable to me than any money cheated out of a customer. I want to leave the customer satisfied that they received full value for their money.
When someone hires MendHome, integrity is included.
Who are you going to hire to do things for you?

I was recently working on a bathroom remodel for the woman in the picture, when she asked me if I would show her how to install some molding.
The flooring contractor, who was supposed to install it, and had precut the pieces, had been delayed. She had painted all the pieces, and wanted the job done so she and her husband could finish moving in.
I showed her how to use my finish nailer safely (the most important part!), gave her some pointers, and watched her install the first few pieces. She installed the rest herself (which was quite a lot), with great results.
It is extremely satisfying to build something with your own hands, look at it, and be proud of what you've done. That's why I do it. I also love to teach people things.
If you think you might be able to do something like this, you're probably right. I've always thought that most people CAN do it, if they WANT to do it.
If you want to, and would like to learn how to get started, give me a call. I can teach you how to "walk", but trust me on this, you'll probably want to "run".

How does a tired old kitchen get updated?
First, remove all the ugly, then add pretty new stuff.
Seriously, after the demolition...
Make some needed wall repairs...
Bring in a plumber to relocate the supply and drain lines...
Next, the biggest step - install all the new upper and lower cabinets...
Used some extra wall space to fit a new dishwasher where none existed before...
Install a new microwave to replace the old range hood...
Quartz countertops, fabricated and installed by Affordable Granite, of North Haven, CT...
A fresh coat of white on the ceiling, and all the trim..
Last, two coats of a modern dove-gray paint over the very nineteen-eighties yellow...

Pipes in the soffit, going to the floor above, prevented installation of cabinets over the sink, but I'll install floating shelves there when the homeowner picks them out.

Do you have a kitchen you'd like updated? Call me, and we can talk about it. I can help.

Another recent job updating a tired old backsplash...
Removed old laminate, and installed herringbone mosaic tile in natural stone...
Grouted new tile, and caulked tile to existing granite countertops, cabinets, and window trim...
Replaced dingy old outlets, switches, and cover plates with crisp clean white ones.
