Local 825 members of APTIM are playing an important role in the cleanup of the Welsbach Superfund Site in Camden and Gloucester City. As part of EPA's long-term remediation effort, members are excavating and loading radiologically contaminated soil into railcars for transport to approved disposal facilities. The cleanup addresses contamination left behind by former gas mantle manufacturing operations that used thorium-bearing materials in the early 1900s. To date, more than 400,000 tons of contaminated soil and waste materials have been removed from the site, helping protect local communities and restore impacted properties throughout Camden County.

On site, Jeff Iozzi and John Humphrey are operating the loaders, Joe Hodges is on the excavator and Neil Klip is running the Trackmobile. Thank you to Lead Engineer Lee St. Clair for the site visit and for highlighting the work being done on this critical project.

What can the federal government learn from Local 825 about growing apprenticeships nationwide?

Business Manager Greg Lalevee recently welcomed Acting U.S. Secretary of Labor Keith Sonderling to the Local 825 Training Center to showcase a proven model for workforce development. As the Trump administration works toward its goal of one million apprentices, the visit highlighted how Local 825 partners with contractors, works with vocational schools, tracks apprentice progress electronically and uses cutting-edge technology to train the next generation of Operating Engineers.

Another major milestone has been reached on the Hudson Tunnel Project.

The Gateway Development Commission has awarded a $712 million contract to the Skanska-Creamer-Sanzari joint venture for the New Jersey Surface Alignment, a critical piece of infrastructure that will connect the future Hudson River rail tunnel to the Northeast Corridor. The project includes approximately 1.5 miles of embankments, viaducts and bridge structures stretching from Secaucus to North Bergen.

With seven of the project's ten construction packages now underway or complete, the Hudson Tunnel Project continues to create thousands of union construction jobs while building the transportation infrastructure the region depends on.

Only two of the four shortlisted teams chose to submit for the latest contract bid, which covers work to tie the new Hudson River tunnel into existing Northeast corridor rail service.

Last night, the Local 825 Executive Board and Rutgers faculty members honored this year's scholarship recipients at the East Brunswick Hilton, where scholarship winners and their families gathered to celebrate their achievements and the opportunities ahead.

The IUOE Local 825 Scholarship Fund helps 10 families each year offset the cost of college for the children and grandchildren of Local 825 members. Investing in education is an investment in the future, and Local 825 is proud to support the next generation as they pursue their goals.

Congratulations to all of this year's scholarship recipients and best wishes for continued success.
