With the spring season in full swing, homeowners begin to question, “What improvements can I make to my yard?”

If you’re looking for inspiration, or just want to create a lower maintenance yard, I propose to you this idea: perennial garden.

The Problem:
Historically people view the ideal landscape as golf course lawns. While this aesthetic has its place, I’m here to persuade you otherwise. The dream of having the perfect lawn is not necessarily out of reach, but it may feel that way to some people, as it requires a lot of energy and/or money to upkeep.

In theory, if you have less lawn, then perfectly maintaining a smaller space should be less of a hassle. This does not require moving to a home with less lawn, or hiring an expert to fix that one patch of grass that simply does not grow the way you want it to. Consider addressing your problem areas with a new solution.

The Solution:
Perennial plants are plants that return each year. No need to go out and purchase them time after time. If you purchase specifically native plants, the odds of them thriving in the appropriate place naturally increases. Native plants have evolved with time. They often have natural defenses against native pests in our area, and they know what to do to keep their population thriving. When placed in the right location, they essentially maintain themselves. There is a perennial plant to fit almost any environment, wet, dry, sunny, or shady.

Perennial gardens can take up some of that blank lawn space and provide you with visual interest and color in spring, summer, and fall seasons. They provide food and safety for local pollinators, such as birds, bees, ladybugs and other native wildlife that can protect your yard from unwanted pests, especially if you have a vegetable or herb garden on your property. In case you did not know, birds eat mosquitoes and ants; and ladybugs assist with aphids and mites.

Perennial gardens can be planted in almost any location. They can be installed by the mailbox or driveway to create an inviting arrival to the property. They can be used as a border around walkways or under windows instead of shrubs to prevent overgrowth blocking the view or path. They can even be used as statement areas in the center of a lawn to cover that stubborn patch of grass that just won't grow correctly. The possibilities are endless, and if you want to spend less time mowing the lawn, perennial beds may just be the solution for you.

Now is a great time to start seeds indoors and plan ahead for your garden. Repurposing old containers is a free, eco-friendly way to reduce waste while growing new plants indoors. Almost any plastic container can be used to start your seeds. Just poke several small holes in the bottom of the container with a sewing needle to allow for proper drainage. If your container has an attached lid, you can use it as a humidity dome to help seedlings thrive; or remove it to create two separate planting trays. You can even use empty water bottles or soda bottles. Just cut them in half, fill the bottom half with soil and they’re ready for planting. If you tape the top half of the bottle back on after seeding, you can use it as a humidity dome, with the cap as an air vent. With a little creativity and a few recycled materials, you can get a head start on your gardening while making a positive impact on the planet.

Gardening in March:
Preparation for the Spring Gardening Season

With the spring season steadily approaching in New England, some people may be wondering, “What can I do to get ahead of the springtime gardening season rush?” If you are eager to feel the soil in your hands and put the gloves back on, then look no further. Here's a list of a few things you can do to jump start your springtime checklist.

1. Pruning
As temperatures start to rise and the ground begins to defrost, our plants begin to end their cycle of dormancy. Before new growth emerges, it's best to prune some of your woody stem favorites in your yard. Fruit trees and berry bushes pruned in the winter can produce a higher yield. Woody ornamental shrubs can also be pruned, but be cautious of removing flower buds when cutting back. If pruning feels too risky, you can always reach out to Natural Living Landscapes!

2. Cleaning up the Garden Bed
Remove any dead or decaying plants from the prior year if you haven't already. Do not compost any plants with a history of pest or disease.

3. Service Tools
Avoid long wait times and lines by getting an early start on tool maintenance. Repair, sharpen, and service any tools that may need maintenance; such as lawnmowers, hedge trimmers, and pruners.

4. Start Plants Indoors
Starting seeds indoors can save you money from buying starters at your local garden center. Starting tomatoes, peppers, and herbs indoors can give you a head start to gardening come springtime. You can also get earlier blooms by starting flowers indoors, such as pansies and petunias.

5. Seeding Cool Season Grasses
Mid March - Early April is a great time to seed cool season grasses in Massachusetts, just make sure temperatures are around 60° to 70°F.

Once the spring season begins, make sure you call Natural Living Landscapes to ensure proper lawn and garden care.” We help clients move toward healthier, more sustainable solutions: using electric equipment to reduce air and noise pollution, avoiding synthetic pesticides in favor of organic alternatives, and approaching every property systemically, without shortcuts.”

Bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis)

Bloodroot, a member of the poppy family, has graceful white blossoms with yellow stamens in the center. The flowers open on sunny days and remain closed on cloudy days and at night. Closed bloodroot flowers in the woods on a cloudy day look like fairy candles.

Bloodroot is one of numerous early spring wildflowers to partner with ants for its survival. Ants pollinate delicate white flowers. When bloodroot seeds form, they come equipped with a fleshy bit of tissue called an elaiosome. Ants find this elaiosome to be a delicious treat. They carry the whole seed down into their nests, feast on the elaiosome, and discard the seed in their underground trash piles. There, the seed is protected and conditions are perfect for it to germinate.

Though the bloodroot flower’s petals drop soon after pollination, the interestingly-shaped foliage stays around for a long time. Double-flowered forms are also available, and while beautiful, these aren’t useful for pollinators. Bloodroot makes an excellent ground cover and can proliferate over a large area if conditions are right. It grows best in rich woodland soils, part shade to full shade.

Bloodroot is poisonous and should not be eaten. Even skin contact with the blood-red sap can cause damage.

You’ve probably seen winterberry holly, even if you didn’t know it: its bright red clusters of berries on bare branches in the wintertime are hard to miss. Unlike other hollies, winterberry holly loses its leaves by winter. This makes the bright red berries stand out even more. The berries persist throughout the winter and are important to birds when food is scarce. A bright red cardinal perched among the winterberry holly boughs is one of the quintessential New England winter sights.

Winterberry holly’s benefits aren’t limited to its berries: its small white flowers are valuable for pollinators early in spring. What’s more, it’s also a host plant for 34 species of moths and butterflies.

Winterberry holly is a shrub that grows 3-15 feet tall and spreads to form colonies. It’s easy to grow in the garden, but needs moist, acidic well-drained soil. Dry soil should be avoided unless you’re willing to water your hollies frequently.

Winterberry holly has both male and female plants. If you want your holly to form berries, you need to plant at least one male plant alongside your female plants. Since there are different varieties and cultivars of winterberry holly that flower at different times, make sure you get a male of the same variety.
