Pressure-treated pine is the most common fence around here, and it's the cheapest up front. But it depends on chemicals to fight rot, and it's prone to warping and twisting as it ages.

Redwood protects itself. Natural tannins in the wood resist rot, decay, and insects, and it holds its shape for 30+ years.
