If you have a well and it’s not protected by insulation and/or a heat source, now is the time to get that done. Next weekend is going to be ugly. If you don’t have a well, you still need to protect faucets and any exposed pipes. Also open cabinet doors in kitchen and bathrooms on exterior walls so that the heat inside your house can get to the pipes. I also always leave faucets in those places running in a very small stream on hot water when we get a hard freeze. This weekend looks like it will be a hard freeze for 2 or 3 days.
Prepare now because more than likely well companies and plumbers won’t be able to get our trucks out on the roads.
Make plans for your animals now and get your groceries and firewood before Friday!!

It’s that time of year again guys! Get those well heads and any exposed pipes wrapped up really well to save yourself a headache later!! If we get a hard freeze we recommend getting some heat in your well house or garage. Just be sure not to get it too close to any pvc pipes or fittings.

Hey everyone, with the extremely cold temperatures moving in this week, Kelvin’s Water Wells would like to remind you all that if you have a well, you need to do some additional things during a hard freeze to protect the well and the plumbing. The rule of thumb in my house growing up was to leave water running somewhere, like a bathroom. Running water typically doesn’t freeze. You don’t need to have it going at full volume, about a pencil size stream should be good, unless the temperature stays way below freezing for an extended period of time. Then I’d go with a bit larger stream.
Running water is NOT an alternative to insulation and heat! Just something that might help in addition to those things.
You also need to use a heat lamp around where the tank is, whether it be in a garage or a well house, just don’t get the heat lamp TOO close to your plumbing or insulation. If you don’t have a heat lamp, a 100 watt light bulb will work in small areas. Portable heaters work, as well, just please please be careful with them! Read the warning labels on all heaters!!
This time of year you should take special care to make sure that the well head and any exposed plumbing is wrapped, and tanks that are outside are wrapped up, preferably with an insulated blanket or a heat blanket, and leaving water running outside at full volume will help, as long as you’ve taken the other measures with insulation and heat.
