Pickles is admiring his work. It's a quality assurance check.

Our Tuesday Tale this week features some special living guests...goats! In an effort to clean up some overgrown parts of the cemetery we are working with Al's Goats of Maine who brought in some of his goats to eat some of the overgrowth. Here are two pictured by the monument of August Tilch.

August Tilch was born in Germany in 1867 and came to the United States in the late 1880s. He went to North Adams, Massachusetts first where he married Marie Hahnel. They came to Lewiston by 1900 and lived on Howe Street. They had no children but their niece, Ottilie Kramer, came from Germany to live with them. The family belonged to the Grace Lutheran Church and Ottilie married Reverend Bernard Janssen of that church in 1918, before sadly dying from the flu pandemic later that same year. August was a prominent member of the German-American community and was a second hand in the Bates Mill. Marie died in 1927 and August died in 1932.
