This was a really enjoyable restoration of some leaded diamond lites completed earlier this year. And my dad helped in the shop some which was nice. 😊

I’ve built many parts, but this was my first complete set of traditional double hung sashes.
I’m really happy with how they turned out :)
I look forward to making more and getting my production process worked out in the shop.
What a treat to glass and glaze them and get to install them too!

Spring bronze weatherstripping is one of the most expensive material costs in window restoration and I’ve been wondering why.
So I tried getting quotes from metal supply companies in the USA for the bulk material so I could bend it myself on my aluminum bending brake.
All the quotes I got would save me no money.

So sorry to say local folks,
I tried contacting Chinese metal manufacturers which is where I suspect the US companies are getting their stock from anyways.
I took and chance and purchased a huge roll.
A tiny order for them they said. Bigger orders would get more for less.
From my calculations, I got about 12 rolls, prob a little more for 600 bucks, shipped right to my door.
The same stuff.
I can customize the width, and with my hem bend being wider, they are heavy duty.
It works great.
But it currently takes me about 2 hours start to finish to bend up 10 big double hung windows worth. I don’t have the best setup for bending yet either.

It will still be nice to have a roll of Pemko bronze on hand.
But this will be my go-to from now on I think.

12 store bought 100’ rolls would be about $5,000
I spent $600.
So I’m saving $4,400.

They even asked me if I needed any specific specs like slitting, etc, I said no.
Makes me wonder if I can order it all ready to go just like it comes from the hardware store 🤔

Somewhere from the manufacturer to the US shelf there is an insane markup and it makes me uncomfortable thinking that it might just be bcuz someone is sitting at a desk and raking in a huge payday with every order.

Passing the markup to restorers and homeowners.
The price of full restoration work already isn’t cheap either.

This was a very pretty single window 🪟 on the front of a home that needed some serious repair.
You’ll see in the last photos the original state of the window when I removed it.
Someone also altered the lower sash and fit an IGU glass into it. IGU is an insulated glass unit that come standard in most modern windows. Double pane.
While you can retrofit into an old sash, it’s not really ideal. The sashes become way heavier than design and in this case, there wasn’t any room for glazing putty.
Someone instead installed vinyl glazing strips meant for a vinyl window and sorta just glued and caulked them around the perimeter of the glass where it meets the wood.
That failed and caused rot to the lower sash tenon areas. Inside and out 🤕
I was able to fill those spots with new wood and also float over with epoxy resin for some flexibility down the line.
I also custom made some Sapele wood exterior glazing strips that fully cover the rabbet joints and seal in the IGU better.
The upper sash’s lower rail also had heavy damage and needed to be removed and I replace the glazing bar area and one side of the tenon. The upper sash had been screwed in place and neglected for a long time. But it wasn’t too far gone to restore.
The sill and some sections of the frame needed full replacement too.
The brickmould was stripped, repaired, oil primed, and re-caulked.
Spring Bronze an silicone bead in all the right spots 🙂

Really happy with how this restoration is turning out in Tower Grove Heights. Final coat of paint and hardware reinstallation finished. I can’t believe how smooth the transom window operates!
It’s been a pleasure using on all exteriors for this project. I love the finish!
The doors and front triple set exterior woodwork needed a whole lot of love.
Happy to be working on this project. ❤️
On to the rest of the windows soon.
