It may still feel like summer in St. Louis, but some pests are already getting ready for fall.

Boxelder bugs often start showing up on the sunny sides of homes as late summer turns toward fall. You may notice them gathering around windows, doors, siding, or other exterior areas that stay warm during the day.

They do not damage your home, and they are not dangerous, but they can become a real nuisance if they find their way inside.

A few things to watch for:

Groups of black-and-red bugs on sunny exterior walls
Activity around windows and doors
Bugs gathering near small cracks or entry points

Now is a good time to check for gaps and openings before fall invaders start moving in.

If you are starting to notice boxelder bugs around your home, STL Pest Control is here to help.

🐿️ Hearing scratching or running sounds above your ceiling?

Tree squirrels are common around St. Louis, especially in neighborhoods with mature trees. Most of the time they stay outside where they belong, but an opening along the roofline can give them access to an attic.

Once inside, squirrels may:

• Build nests in attic spaces
• Damage insulation
• Chew wood, siding, and other materials
• Gnaw on electrical wiring
• Use openings around eaves, soffits, and rooflines to get inside

If you hear scratching, scurrying, or movement in the attic during the morning or late afternoon, it may be worth having the area inspected.

STL Pest Control can identify activity and entry points and help with professional wildlife removal and exclusion.

If yellowjackets suddenly seem to be everywhere in August, you are not imagining it.

By late summer, yellowjacket colonies are at their largest. That means more worker wasps are out searching for food, especially around patios, trash cans, grills, pet food, and sugary drinks.

You may notice them:

Hovering around outdoor meals
Going after soda cans or sweet drinks
Flying near garbage or fallen fruit
Nesting in the ground, shrubs, or wall voids

Yellowjackets can become more defensive this time of year, especially if their nest is disturbed.

If you are seeing increased activity around your home, it is a good time to have it checked before it gets worse.

Seeing a giant wasp flying low over your lawn?

Before you panic, it may be a cicada killer.

Cicada killers are large wasps commonly noticed during the summer around sunny lawns, sidewalks, patios and landscaping. Females dig burrows in the soil where they bring cicadas to provide food for their young.

Although their size can be intimidating, cicada killers are solitary wasps and are generally not aggressive toward people. However, their digging can create noticeable soil mounds, and several burrows near a walkway, play area or entrance can become a concern.

Watch for:

• Large black and yellow wasps flying close to the ground
• Small burrow openings in dry or sandy soil
• Loose piles of soil around lawns or landscaping
• Wasps carrying cicadas back to their nests

Not every large wasp is a yellowjacket. Proper identification is important before deciding what to do.

You Found a Tick. Now What?

Finding a tick attached to you, your child or your pet can be unsettling, but removing it correctly is important.

Use clean, fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible. Pull upward with steady, even pressure. Do not twist, jerk, crush or burn it. After removal, clean the bite area and your hands with soap and water or rubbing alcohol.

Avoid covering the tick with petroleum jelly, nail polish or essential oils. These methods may delay removal.

Afterward:

• Write down the date of the bite
• Take a clear photo of the tick
• Watch the area for a developing rash
• Pay attention to fever, headache, fatigue or muscle aches
• Contact a healthcare provider if symptoms develop

Lone Star tick bites have been associated with illnesses such as ehrlichiosis, STARI and alpha-gal syndrome.

Finding ticks around your lawn, wooded edges or outdoor living areas? STL Pest Control can help reduce tick activity where your family and pets spend time.
