SWT Design We specialize in Landscape Architecture and Civil Engineering. STL | KC But more importantly, Living Design describes our practice.

More than a metaphor, Living Design describes our philosophy, approach and values as a firm. Whether in the office or at home, every member of our team personifies our design principles, and our campus is a living laboratory for sustainable best practices. From the moment we begin a project, we are looking at how the site is performing in its current state. As we progress through concept, design a

nd reality, benchmarks are set to ensure that the end result can be successfully measured. For us, design is a living, breathing thing. Vision guides it towards a goal, process moves it forward, and our curiosity fuels it. For more than 20 years we have curated a diverse and award-winning portfolio of open spaces, approaching design with a passion for innovation. Collaboration, vision, and curiosity spur a design practice that we use to solve even the most complex and challenging design problems. As such, our team has become leaders in the profession, creating value with each design while focusing on environmental responsibility, social justice, and economic improvement.

SWT Design Founder, Ted Spaid, recently spoke with KMOV about how thoughtful landscape design can help our region prepare for a changing climate.

“What will this be like in 100 years?”

Parts of the story were filmed at our St. Louis office, which demonstrates sustainable strategies including a rain garden, permeable parking, rooftop gardens and solar panels.

Watch First Alert Forward: Preparing STL for Climate Resilience to hear more from Ted and learn how design can help build a more resilient St. Louis. Watch here:

We’re proud to share an update on the Tower Grove Connector.

Phase 1, along Tower Grove Avenue and Vandeventer Avenue between Tower Grove Park and Sarah Street is complete and already seeing use. Construction is ongoing on Phase 2, along Sarah Street from Vandeventer Avenue to Forest Park Parkway connecting to the Brickline Greenway at the Cortex MetroLink Station.

This 1.8-mile project will connect Tower Grove Park to the Cortex Innovation District through a continuous route for cyclers and walkers, while adding intersection improvements, beautification, and traffic improvements. You can see the difference.

Once both phases are complete, this project will create a more inviting corridor between two of St. Louis’s most active destinations, creating a more inter-connected and stronger urban environment for St. Louis.

We’ll see you on the Connector!

Thank you to the City of St. Louis Government, Greater St. Louis, Inc., Lochmueller Group, Trailnet and Via Partnership for bringing this vision to life.

It's time to say farewell to two more of our interns from this summer.

We wish Galen and Llewellyn all the best as they head back to school. We’re thankful for their hard work, creativity and curiosity in applying their education to projects ranging from theaters to wetlands.

It’s been a great summer, and we thank them both for their dedication, spirit, and love of design. We’re grateful to have had both of you as part of the SWT Design team, and we’re excited to see what you accomplish in the future.

Our team headed out for our annual float trip last weekend, this time on the Niangua River. It was a perfect way to spend a summer weekend together outside the office.

A little time on the river, a few rapids, plenty of laughs, and of course, a campfire to wrap things up. We’re always grateful for an excuse to step away from the day-to-day, enjoy the outdoors, and have some fun with the people we get to work with.

As summer comes to a close, we're wishing our interns, Sarah and Lucy, all the best as they head back to school to continue pursuing their degrees in Landscape Architecture. Sarah has spent the past year with SWT Design, while Lucy wrapped up her second summer with our team. Together, they brought curiosity, creativity, and enthusiasm to projects ranging from bat caves and bike parks to greenways and master plans, making valuable contributions every step of the way.

Thank you both for your hard work, positive attitudes, and willingness to jump in wherever needed. We're grateful to have had you on our team and look forward to seeing all that you'll accomplish in the future.

We’re excited to announce our newest team member – Joie! She is returning to SWT Design to join us full time after being one of our amazing interns last summer.

Joie is from Washington, MO and has recently graduated from LSU with a bachelor’s in landscape architecture. She is the Dr. Charles Fountain Scholar of 2025, a national honor that is awarded to one undergraduate student of color in landscape architecture who demonstrates exceptional design talent and uses their voice to inspire change and lead with purpose.

Joie’s love for nature, art, and projects with a positive social impact shine through her approach to each detail. She’s especially excited to return to the St. Louis area and serve a community she deeply cares about.

Welcome back Joie!

Wehner Park Sport Courts opened last week in Shrewsbury, bringing a new tennis court and two pickleball courts to the community. From concrete pour to ribbon cutting to first serve, it's been a fun one to watch come together.

Thank you to Shrewsbury Parks and Recreation and Next Level Construction for working with us to bring this project to life.

Today we recognize Juneteenth and the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. We reflect on the enduring significance of freedom, justice, and equality and the role these ideals play in creating stronger communities.

If you're lucky enough to be at The Muny opening show tonight, you may notice something new in the Upper Plaza.

Six umbrellas, designed to resemble the flower of a morning glory, are the finishing touch to Kooyumjian Family Plaza. By day they provide shade before the show. At night, they colorfully glow to extend the theatrical mood of the space.

The plaza opened last season as part of a $5 million transformation where SWT Design served as lead designer, bringing a new box office, concession stand, additional restrooms, and a more formal entrance to the one-acre space above the Muny's 11,000 seats.
