Deep Green Garden Co-op

Deep Green Garden Co-op We are local folks with experience creating urban gardens and garden infrastructure and want to help you with your own plot.

We are local folks with experience creating urban gardens and garden infrastructure (chicken coops, compost tumblers, rain-barrel irrigation systems, worm farms, greenhouses, pollination gardens, raised beds, etc.). We’re not landscapers; everything in nature has a purpose. We try to bring that same ethos to what we make, be it edible groundcovering or native plants to stem erosion. If you would like help adding something to your yard or garden, please send us a message.

We've hired new sanitation workers. Our chickens help turn over our compost by digging the top out into a "playpen." Then I pull the back compost forward and toss their dug-through portion into the back. Over time, the whole pile is turned over. The chickens get extra snacks (worms and kitchen scraps), and the compost breaks down much faster.

Cool your house with the wind. Ancient cultures across the Middle East used an architectural feature called a Wind Catcher (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windcatcher) to cool their indoor spaces.

In a two story house, open the top floor windows, which creates a low-pressure zone as the wind blows through the hottest part of your house. Close all windows on the main floor and open one window in the basement, the window facing the oncoming wind. This creates high pressure in the basement, which is cooled by being in contact with the earth. Cool air moves up and through the house.

In a drier environment than Saint Louis, you could pair this with an evaporative cooler in the basement to get even better results.

A video showing a nucleus (travel hive) of bees being put into a full-size hive. Note, this is a first-time beekeeper and therefore not very instructive, but it's at least fun to see the bees!
