Winners are made in the offseason. As NFL preseason kicks off, we’re highlighting a few HOK-designed training facilities that give teams the environments they need to prepare, recover and perform at their best.

Today’s training facilities are designed around every part of an athlete’s day. Efficient connections between training, recovery, nutrition, meeting and practice spaces streamline routines, while environments for rest and connection support the physical and mental well-being of players, coaches and staff.

From the weight room to the practice field, every detail can contribute to performance.

Arthur Ashe Stadium opened in 1997 as the world’s largest tennis-specific venue and the centerpiece of the US Open. But rain could still stop play.

For years, multiple teams explored ways to add a retractable roof, but none worked. The breakthrough came from rethinking the problem entirely: instead of trying to support the roof with the existing stadium, the design team created an independent structure that floats above it without touching it.

Completed in 2016, the retractable roof eliminated weather-related delays and improved broadcast reliability while preserving Ashe’s recognizable silhouette. More importantly, it proved the stadium could continue to evolve without starting over.

That idea is carrying forward today. Ahead of the 2026 US Open, Arthur Ashe Stadium is undergoing a $600 million reimagination as part of the USTA’s $800 million investment in the National Tennis Center, delivered between tournaments without interrupting play.

What separates a good designer from a great one? The answer might have less to do with design talent than you think.

Curiosity. Restraint. Concept control. Communication. Listening beyond what’s being said. We asked members of HOK’s Board of Directors what they believe takes a designer from good to great. What do you think?

𝐂𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐨𝐟𝐟! The Port of Seattle Commission has approved initial funding for the S Concourse Evolution project at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport Seattle-Tacoma Intl. Airport, a major step forward for international travel in the Pacific Northwest.

As lead designer, HOK is partnering with prime consultant and lead architect AECOM to transform the 1970s-era concourse into a more resilient, efficient and passenger-centered international gateway. Inspired by the Pacific Northwest’s distinctive geography and rich cultural diversity, the design will create an intuitive and welcoming travel experience that celebrates Washington State’s heritage and enhances facility connectivity.

Designed for the evolving needs of international travel, the project will include expanded dining, retail and amenity offerings, larger boarding areas and advanced technologies to improve passenger comfort and convenience. Modernized building systems will support the airport’s sustainability goals and create a high-performing facility equipped to serve the region’s growing travel needs.

We’re honored to partner with the Port of Seattle, AECOM, and teammates Magnusson Klemencic Associates, Mazzetti and PAE on this investment in SEA’s future.

Mass timber is a powerful tool in the healthcare designer's toolkit. Its warmth, connection to nature and ability to reduce embodied carbon make it well-suited to environments that support wellbeing.

At Western State Hospital’s new mass-timber administration building in Lakewood, Washington, the net-zero ready design celebrates the local history of the timber industry while pushing the envelope of sustainable design. Some of the building’s timber columns are made from trees harvested directly from the site.

“The mass-timber design serves a number of goals,” said Alan Bright FAIA, HOK’s senior principal, design in San Francisco. “It highlights the natural beauty of western Washington and its evergreen forests. It reinforces the state’s commitment to environmentally friendly design, and it creates a warm and calming environment that benefits well-being.”

HOK is leading the design for the administration building and an adjacent 350-bed forensic psychiatric hospital, both currently under construction, that will transform the Western State campus into a center of excellence for behavioral healthcare.

Across Canada, healthcare facilities are being asked to support more integrated care, more adaptable spaces and a more thoughtful patient experience.

At the new Waterloo Eye Institute, HOK is expanding and renovating the University of Waterloo School of Optometry and Vision Science with a design that merges clinical services, biomedical research and optometric education in a single facility.

With many patients having low or no vision, every design decision—lighting transitions, acoustic contrast, floor textures, counter heights—is calibrated to guide people through the space.

“The best healthcare spaces adapt to patients’ needs, prioritizing physical accessibility and emotional comfort while maintaining flexibility as medical requirements change,” says Linda Vela, Canadian Healthcare practice leader in HOK’s Toronto studio. “By bringing services to the individual rather than moving the patient, facilities optimize healing and efficiency.”

Construction on the Waterloo Eye Institute is underway and anticipated to be completed at the end of 2026, with the official building opening expected in summer 2027.

Presidential libraries are as much museums as they are archives. And, in the case of the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum, they're even more than that.

Architectural Record recently featured the HOK-designed institution in College Station, Texas.

Opened in 1997, the three-building facility includes the 41st president's library-museum; the Texas A&M University George Bush School of Government and Public Service; and a robust conference center—all realized in a mix of limestone, pink granite and buff brick.
