π π°βοΈ Handy Tips to Prevent Frozen Pipes βοΈπ°π
Freezing temperatures can cause great damage to your plumbing, leading to burst pipes, costly repairs, and major headaches. Hereβs a few tips to help get you through:
Before The Cold Weather Sets In:
πΈ Turn Off & Drain Outdoor Water Sources β Sprinkler systems, hoses, and irrigation lines should be shut off and emptied.
πΉ Seal Off Drafts β Check for cold air leaks near pipes, especially around doors and windows. Use insulation or weather stripping.
πΈ Locate Your Main Water Shut-Off Valve β Knowing where it is can save you time in an emergency.
πΉ Insulate Exposed Pipes β Wrap pipes in unheated areas (attics, basements, crawl spaces) with pipe insulation or heating tape.
When Temperatures Drop Below Freezing:
πΈ Let Faucets Drip β A slow trickle keeps water moving and helps prevent freezing.
πΉ Open Cabinet Doors β Allow warm air to circulate around pipes under sinks, especially on exterior walls.
πΈ Keep Your Heat On β Maintain a consistent temperature, even if you're away.
If Your Pipes Freeze:
πΉ Shut Off the Water Immediately β This helps prevent pipes from bursting.
πΈ Thaw Pipes Safely β Use a hair dryer, heating pad, or space heater. Never use an open flame or propane torch.
πΉ Turn Water Back On Slowly β Once pipes are thawed, check for leaks before restoring full pressure.
A little prevention now can save you from a major plumbing disaster later. Stay warm and keep those pipes flowing! βοΈπ°
