This has definitely been the hardest winter weā€™ve faced yet in the shop.

The snow storm that came through a few weeksā€¦monthsā€¦years? ago brought us to a standstill for delivering orders. Typically Kentucky snow sticks around for a few days, melts away, then we go on with business as usual. Not this storm. I think Iā€™ve forgotten what this place looks like with bare ground.

Between not being able to come and go from the shop, and having to cut firewood every single morning to keep the shop warm enough to work in, it has been stressful. Weā€™re truly grateful for our customers who have shown monumental patience as we all get through this frozen mess. Itā€™s gonna be 62Ā° on Tuesday guys šŸŽ‰

Of course we kept moving along as fast as the weather would allow. A set of HUGE bookcases for , two walnut dining table table tops for , another run of Eclipse bases, and a desk/vanity combo that Iā€™ve been working on for our daughters room.

Tuesday the snow will be all but gone, business and life can get back to normal. We have a pretty substantial remodeling project planned for the shop in the coming weeks that will boost our efficiency tenfold. More about that lateršŸ˜

In a house full of people with sensory issues, the Roomba didnā€™t last very long. Itā€™s loud, bumps into everything, and would get stuck and be lost for weeks at a time.

So Rosie got a new home in the spray booth and I honestly canā€™t emphasize how essential this thing has become.

Fine sawdust finds its way into every nook and cranny of a shop, even with all the filters in the world. Dust from overspray and fine sawdust are the bane of any spray booth operator, and no amount of sweeping will get it completely contained. Rosie solves that problem for us though, which is why sheā€™s won the employee of the month for the past 5 years.

If you use a spray booth, do yourself a favor and get a robot vacuum. Trust me. You can used ones on FB marketplace for $100 or less.

Thatā€™s a wrap on the lattice screen project!

This was one of those rare projects that combined all of the very best elements into one. A delightful client that is both understanding and decisive, amazing design that fits perfectly within its surroundings, and the opportunity to learn new skills with a new material.

This was the first major job we have worked on using pvc, and while it definitely presented its own set of challenges, learning how to overcome those hurdles and shape the material into the clientā€™s vision was a welcome mission.

Thank you so much to for trusting us with his fabulous design for this space. We look forward to working with you more in the future!

Priming the last 3 pieces today, then will do the final sanding, 2 coats of paint, then off to the install!

This job has been amazing, with plenty of lessons learned and skills honed. Canā€™t wait to see them in place!

Titebond 3 has an open working time of about 15 minutes.
The slowest setting solvent weld pvc glue I can find has an open working time of 3 minutes.šŸ˜…

If I was told 10 years ago that Iā€™d be working beside my best friend and favorite person in the world every day, building the bases for the highest honor in North American Thoroughbred Racing, I definitely wouldnā€™t believe you.

Itā€™s a privilege and an absolute honor to craft these bases, all exclusively made from black walnut trees grown on historic horse farms right here in Central Kentucky, the horse capitol of the world.

Finally joining the wide belt sander gangšŸ¤—

This machine is two years older than me, but seems to be in much better shape. I should have it set up and running within a week, then weā€™ll be flattening raised panels and entire doors!

Weā€™ll also be offering sanding services for other shops and clients, if anyone is interested.

Before, and after!

Getting to collaborate with your idols on projects is the best feeling ever. and at Morningside Woodcrafters in Lexington have taught me more over the past 17 years about woodworking (and running a woodworking business) than any college or craft school possibly could, and Iā€™m eternally grateful. W***y talked me out of spending $20k on a woodworking school in New England 15 years ago, and said I could learn everything myself. And of course he was rightā€¦again. He is W***y, after all. That tends to happen a lot.

W***y is the best hand carver Iā€™ve ever known and to this day it still blows my mind what he can do with a chisel, and how fast he gets it done! Collaborating with him on these crosses was so much fun, and definitely a job Iā€™ll never forget.
