Section III HS swimmers get chance to make a splash: ‘This is really a dream come true’

Syracuse, N.Y. -- A dip in the pool has never felt as refreshing for Central New York high school swimmers as they are this week.

As a sport considered at low risk for the spread of coronavirus, swimming was allowed to start practice on Monday. The season is shortened and there will be no sectional or state tournaments, but the chance for improvement and competition has been preserved for now.

“We’ve been off for so long for the boys, this is really a dream come true,” JD/CBA coach Bob Bewley said at practice Tuesday. “All the athletic directors got together and said they were going to make it happen. This is going to be a competitive environment. So we’re real excited.”

Practice started for Section III swim teams this week.

Chapel Hill man drowns in outdoor swimming pool at Utah hotel

A Chapel Hill man died Monday while practicing holding his breath in an out-of-state hotel swimming pool.

The Summit County Sheriff's Office posted on Facebook that deputies responded to the Westgate Hotel in Park City, Utah, around 9:45 p.m.

At the hotel, deputies learned that the 22-year-old drowned in the hotel's outdoor pool while holding his breath underwater.

According to deputies, the man was staying at the hotel with three friends, and the group had been drinking alcohol throughout the day. The man told his friends he was going to try to hold his breath underwater longer than ever before.

After five minutes, the friends became worried and pulled the man from the pool, deputies said. They performed CPR until EMS personnel arrived, but after being transported to Park City Medical Center, the man was declared dead.

The name of the man will not be released until family members are notified.

On Facebook, the Summit County Sheriff’s Office posted "sincere condolences to the family and friends of the decedent."

RI swimming pool owner says her business is safe. So why are the doors locked?

With more U.S. aid, Gov. Raimondo says, she might have banned indoor dining when fall surge began. A6

EAST PROVIDENCE — The owner of an indoor aquatics center with a state-of-the-art air-circulation system is imploring the state to follow federal guidelines for swimming pools and allow her to reopen.

Susan Pascale-Frechette cites the Centers for Disease Control directives for pools, adding that she wasn’t initially included on the list of indoor sporting facilities that have had to close for Gov. Gina Raimondo’s now three-week “pause” – and was added only after she started asking questions.

Chlorine, plexiglass lane dividers and a state of the art air filtration system. She's tried to do everything right, but the state says it's not enough.

Different Types of Chlorine Sanitizers for Swimming Pools

As you may already know, chlorine is the most popular swimming pool sanitizer, but there are a host of other sanitation methods currently in the industry that you can also use to keep your swimming pool clean. We will discuss in this article different types of pool chlorine and explain why it is so popular and effective for sanitizing your swimming pool water. Six (6) different types of chlorine, or chlorine compounds, are used in the sanitation of swimming pool water. Sanitizers come in liquid, powder, and tablet form, and many pool owners often have questions about the differences between them. These sanitizers are sodium hypochlorite, calcium hypochlorite, lithium hypochlorite, chlorine gas, and stabilized compounds trichlor and dichlor. In this article, we hope to get some of the questions you may have answered and learn more about these different forms of chlorine.

The World Health Organization has published international guidelines for the safety of swimming pools and similar recreational-water environments, including standards for minimizing microbial and chemical hazards. The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also provides information on pool sanitation and water related illnesses for health professionals and the public. The main organizations providing certifications for pool and spa operators and technicians are the National Swimming Pool Foundation and Association of Pool & Spa Professionals. The certifications are accepted by many state and local health departments.

Chlorine is added to the water to kill germs. But it does not work right away. If used properly, free chlorine* can kill most germs within a few minutes. CDC recommends pH 7.2–7.8 and a free chlorine concentration of at least 1 ppm in pools and at least 3 ppm in hot tubs/spas.

If using cyanuric acid, a chlorine stabilizer, or chlorine products with cyanuric acid (for example, products commonly known as dichlor or trichlor [see product label]), CDC recommends pH 7.2–7.8 and a free available chlorine concentration of at least 2 ppm in pools. CDC recommends not using cyanuric acid or chlorine products with cyanuric acid in hot tubs/spas.
