Wasps, yellow jackets and bald faced hornets are continuing to grow their nests everyday. I found this nest under a deck during their pest service. This week I found Larry, his brother Darrell and his other brother Darrell. (That’s an old tv show reference if you didn’t get it). Decorating for Halloween is much different than nature doing it itself. Spiders can be a little more difficult to control due to their non grooming habits. Guess what day it is? It’s Fun Find Friday!!
This week I got to add this beauty to my collection. While treating a customers home, I noticed something red moving through the pine needles. I saw it and dropped all my equipment to grab a specimen jar. This my friends is a Velvet Ant or better known as a “Cow Killer” Ant. It gets that nickname from cattle farmers that say that the sting from this can kill a cow. While not ever proven, it still has the nickname. And it’s actually not an ant. It’s a solitary ground wasp. They don’t infest homes, wandering like a nomad just looking for its next meal, it’s always traveling. If you see one, admire it from a distance, do not try to pick up. My number 1 tip to prevent mosquitoes? Don’t give them a place to lay eggs and continue to reproduce. Any standing water on your property, empty it out. Simple as that. For real local solutions, call a real, local expert.
