Just bought a new home & want to make it more “your style” or, wanting to refresh that master or guest bathroom?
We just wrapped up this small remodel recently & it came out great!
Homeowners had reached out for quotes to do the plumbing & they wanted to handle everything else. There original plan was to remove the existing walls, tub & floor. Then cut & cap of the tubspout line to make it a shower valve only & raise the valve up to standard height. Then, install a new fiberglass pan & a shower surround kit. After going over everything w/ the clients. The kit they were wanting was pretty pricy for a basic shower surround kit. So I had brought up the option of just tiling everything to get that sleek design & look. And also recommended we just get rid of the original valve completely & rough in a new shower valve.
After doing numbers & going over everything, and explaining in detail what we could do, the homeowners agreed & wanted to move forward.
Thankfully, they handled all of the demo work so I just had to come in handle the rest.
We opened up the floor to remove the 1 ½ P-trap & drain line, and roughed in a new 2” line and P-trap up through the floor to accommodate a new linear style drain instead of a center square drain & patched the subfloor. We followed by installing 2x6 bracing around the entire shower perimeter, and also added (2) pieces on each side of the walls for bracing for the door later on. Then, built the curb using 2x4’s and framed in a niche on the back wall. We installed the waterproof membrane w/ a mud pan & we set the linear drain in. Following that, We cement boarded the walls floor to ceiling & waterproofed.
The homeowner had decided to go with 12x24’s tiles on both the bathroom floor, shower walls & niche.
Then went w/ a hexagon mosaic tile for the shower floor.
Instead of using bullnose or quarter rounded tile, we went with a more modern look & installed L shaped brushed nickel tile edging on both sides of the shower walls inside of the niche on all 4 corners. And then, we installed tile around the entire perimeter of the bathroom floor instead of baseboard to give it a cleaner finish, also with the metal L shaped tile edging.
For the curb, and entry way at door, we decided on using 6” beveled threshold since the homeowners wanted to do a custom fab shower door.
Once completed the homeowners had decided on using a specific grout for both wall & floor tiles, followed by the same matching color caulking.
After the tile, grout & shower pan where finished we also added tile to the linear drain that way it flowed with the floor tiles vs having just a standard metal finished drain.
We also went ahead & moved the existing toilet supply line up to 8” off floor & 8” from center of the fl**ge so that way the tile baseboard wouldn’t make the toilet supply line awkward w/ an escutcheon plate. We wanted it to be above the baseboard, so it would be clean & a sleek look.
We went ahead & installed a new vanity for the client, mounted to the wall & installed all new valves for the H/C supply lines & a new p-trap for vanity sink.
We set the toilet, installed new supply lines & siliconed the base to the floor as we did w/ the vanity top. And then used the color matched shower/bath silicone caulking to get it that sleek look & match the grout.
We installed brushed nickel Moen positemp trim plate, handle & shower head/arm w/ built in handheld. And also, the same model/ color (2) handle center set faucet, and also the same model/ color towel rack, toilet paper holder & towel hook.
We also patched & sanded down the rough areas & holes. Sanded & re-painted the entire bathroom to the color of there existing bedroom paint that we got a local company to make a batch that was a perfect match & then just a flat white for the ceiling.
For the final touches, I also went ahead & removed the current (2) receptacle switches & plates, and the (1) outlet receptacle & plate with all new “square switches & outlets, and installed brushed nickel cover plates to match the other bathroom fixture colors.
The homeowner was happy with the outcome & was thankful for all the recommendations id given them, what would be best for there value, what would last longer & all around make them happiest at the end result!
We completed this bathroom, and now the clients getting quotes on getting a custom shower door installed. He was thinking of doing a “prefabricated kit” from the box stores, but I recommend they go custom due to the overall look & pricing between the (2) options wasn’t dramatically more.
