Backyard transformation
Setting on the edge of a wetland area this back yard had a narrow strip of land. It was mostly sloped with about 8’ of grade change. The design transformed this unusable space into a central pathway and a series of retaining walls creating several outdoor spaces. Including a new deck, koi pond and hot tub.

Capturing views
These strategically placed Maglin custom benches allow for level viewing stations along this sloped 260’ board walk. These bench lines highlight the directional change and continue the flow of the deck, bumper guard and hand rail.

Labyrinth garden
This garden set on the side of a hill had about 8’ of grade change. It has a meandering series of paths that is interlaced with an orchard and seasonal pallet of perennials and shrubs border to engage the senses as you meander for no other reason than to just enjoy the walk. This original garden pathways created in just gravel would wash out every time it rained hard. We redesigned this labyrinth to capture the water by integrating drainage channels into the brick walks in a series of strategic locations keeping the flow of water within an underground drainage system. Since we put it in almost 12 years ago the walks have stood the test of time keeping this garden looking amazing.

Regenerating conservation land
This back yard was usable space and the clients wanted to invest in a place for the family to spend time together. With this being the only spot to expand there back yard they recaptured conservation land and created a pool, fireplace, grill and raised deck with surrounding walls. What they got was an incredible place for family and friends to come together. Design by Kimberly Mercurio, refined by the client to support budgeting constraints. We started in December and had most of it completed by July .

Songbird the inspiration
Sometimes you create names for projects to bring meaning to a space that remains silent without reflection and appreciation for the beauty that lies within. These images reflect a natural landscape that bring harmony with nature, its simplicity in material’s and richness in plants allow for one to enjoy this summer cottage. Steel planters anchor the landscape and bring vibrancy to this space during the season and spacial clarity off season. Thanks for the guidance and inspiration of Jessalyn Jarest Landscape Architecture this space has been brought to life. The landscape designed perfectly to reflect the lifestyle and passion of the owners who spend hours toiling in the garden . This is a landscape to be lived in and enjoyed by the sweat of the brow , it’s not perfectly manicured but feels welcoming and lived in. The adults guide the young children with tools in hand, helping to keep the garden thriving. Sometimes the richness comes from just being at one with your outdoor space.

Conservation restrictive landscape
This project, that is almost completed was created to finish the landscape for an existing house, completely rebuild with a new addition. It was grandfathered in with several limiting restrictions, the existing foundation, about 25’ away from a brook. The restrictions were all native plants with restorative plantings and tree replacements, invasive removals and lawn alternative no mow fescue, only permeable driveway , sidewalk and cobbles , only temporary irrigation and a natural leaf mulch. An old trick the lawn received a layer of straw to help successfully keep seed in place after two storms with 6 in of rain within the last 2 weeks. Despite the limitations imposed we managed to create a landscape the owner could enjoy while being compliment.

Connecting family
This project involved a new landscape around Belmont’s first ADU. This front yard was transformed into a handycap accessible yard for the grandparents who had just moved in. The front yard was an opportunity to create terraced walls and plantings that created complete privacy from the street and a destination to set and enjoy this outdoor environment. In addition to creating this unique space, the design allowed for a welcoming front walk to the front door for the guests who visit. The final outcome took an underutilized front yard and took back new usable outdoor living space. Designer Melissa McDonald

Mass nurseryman association summer event
Long time friend Micheal and Bonnie Dirr where at Savage sod farm yesterday. Micheal gave a talk on new cultivars of his favorite plants, most notably hydrangeas. There were long lines of autograph signings all morning and afternoon. In the last Twenty years I have had the privilege of participating in two week long lecture / garden tour events at Williams college with Micheal and Allan Armitage, visited a customer project and the Arnold arboretum with him for an entire day . Micheals enthusiasm for plants is infectious and he has had a profound impact on our industry. I feel so privileged to know him both personally and professionally. He is the exact same person in private as he is in public places.

Freedom and Liberty
As we celebrate the Fourth of July we bring family and friends to come together in these outdoor spaces. These are the highlights of year to just enjoy these special occasions. We are blessed to have this freedom to live our lives and remember that is a gift . That our liberty is a privilege, that we make everyone aware that we need to protect it. So grateful to be able to provide outdoor spaces in backyards , to be the center of enjoyment and relaxation. Happy fourth
