Septic Pump Electrical: Why Disconnect Location Matters

At Catani Electric, we make sure your septic system is wired safely and to code. One detail that matters: the disconnect switch.

Per the National Electrical Code, the disconnect must be:

* Within sight of the tank
* Within 50 feet
* Installed above grade

Why this matters:

* Keeps service technicians safe with a visible shutoff
* Allows quick emergency power shutoff
* Prevents accidental startup during repairs
* Above-grade installation avoids water exposure, corrosion, and unsafe access inside the tank area

🚫 Your indoor breaker panel doesn’t count—it’s not within sight
🚫 Below-grade switches are unsafe and not permitted

The wind storm that came through this week damaged a lot of homes and their electrical services. A tree fell on the overhead wires and detached them from the house. The tree also severed the neutral wire that supports the overhead wires. We reconnected the service to the customers house, repaired the broken neutral wire, repaired the damaged weather head at the top of the conduit and raised the lines off the deck to get power back on safely to this house. JCP&L came out the following day and replaced the overhead line for a permanent fix.
