There’s still a high number of dead ash trees in SE MN. The DNR has grant money available ($1.7 million for 2026) to help manage EAB. Applications are open to cities, non-profits, SWCD, counties, regional authorities, etc. Please encourage elected officials or other eligible entities to apply: https://www.dnr.state.mn.us/forestry/urban/protect-community-forests-2026.html. Let’s get these trees taken care of and replant for the next generation.

Most of the ash trees are now skeletons on the landscape. I get asked a lot what kind of trees to replant and my answer is try to plant several different species. Diversity will help minimize loss when the next invasive species or disease rolls through. The local greenhouses are also a wealth of knowledge to help you choose a species that best fits your soil and space conditions.

Directional felling today! Not a good time to cut oaks, but this one was dead and threatening to do some damage during the next wind storm. A bit decayed at the base, so had to cut the stump high to get into some solid wood. Nice cool 60 degree “summer” day to get some outdoor work done.
