Camellias come in all colors from red to white to purple to brighten the winter scenery. They produce tea seed oil for cosmetics and cooking and the leaves can be used for tea. In fact one species is the most common plant in the world to be used to make tea — green, black, and white tea! The evergreen shrub can live up to 200 years old.

Mexican mint marigold is a native tarragon substitute. The Aztecs dedicated it to the rain god Tlāloc. The plant is now mostly used in Mexico and Centra America as a tea to treat the common cold, intestinal gas, and diarrhea. It can be dried and burnt to repel insects too. Even the small flowers make vibrant yellow natural dye!

Dogfennel, part of the aster family, is one of our tried and true natives. It’s already gone to seed this year; the white feathery flower is an early fall bloomer. Although it is toxic, you can extract the essential oil for its anti-fungal properties. Florida's scarlet-bodied wasp moth, Cosmosoma myrodora, feeds on dogfennel while maturing and stores the toxins to ward off predators. The name comes from it looking similar to the herb fennel plus the fact that the w**d used to be line the floors of dog kennels to ward off fleas and ticks.

Hydrangea day is January 5th although they bloom in the summer. We still love to use their dried flowers during winter on wreaths and dried arrangements. It is said that their different color showy sepals have different meanings. Pink for love and sincerity, blue for forgiveness, white for boasting or bragging, and purple for abundance and understanding. Bigleaf hydrangea actually changes color depending on the soil pH
