1971. The last time the Modesto Library got a building built for it.

The story runs back further. Free reading rooms downtown in the 1890s. A library at 14th and I Street in 1912, paid for by Oramil McHenry, now the McHenry Museum. Overcrowded by 1927. Then a new building at 1500 I Street in 1971, when Modesto counted 68,000 residents. The city has more than tripled since. HAGGERTY is inside that building right now.

We pulled asbestos material out of the basement, main floor, and mezzanine, then went after the systems. New HVAC on both floors. New electrical from the switchgear to the light fixtures. Plumbing, dampers, a relocated fire riser room, sprinklers, fireproofing, and alarm. Data, cameras, access control, and paging for the way people use a library now. ADA upgrades throughout, because a building drawn in 1970 was not built for how the public reaches a library in 2026. On top of that go new ceilings, casework, flooring, paint, doors, storefronts, and elevator work, with concrete, paving, and site work outside.

A sculpted oak already stands in the early learning space, waiting on the walls to go up around it. Donors to the Friends of the Modesto Library's Lifelong Legacy campaign made that room possible, alongside a state Building Forward grant and county library funding.
