A homeowner recently hired us to finish wiring his house after he had misgivings about the original electrician. As you can see in the picture on the left, the wires coming into the panel location were ridiculously long and tangled, and only somewhat legibly Marked. The picture on the right is after four hours of intense shoulder work while standing on a ladder to get things in their current state. I was certainly feeling it with aches and pains the next day, but it feels good to have things cleaned up.

This probably looks like an odd picture, but it’s a picture of a piece of wire that has been overheated because someone put a larger size breaker on the circuit  than the wire was intended for. Unfortunately, two space heaters were plugged into it for a period of time, overheating the wire, and cooking the insulation to where it deteriorated and created a ”short”,  causing the breaker to trip. We were at my sisters house yesterday celebrating Christmas together when we got a call from the homeowner.  unfortunately, this circuit also included the bedroom that she uses as a home office, which she would be needing to be able to work today. So we stopped for what we would hope would be just a short service call, starting last night at 7:15, on our way home. three hours later, we had replaced two links of wire in her attic that were causing problems and could easily have caused a fire. It made for a very interesting Christmas day, but it also was very satisfying, knowing that we had probably prevented a house fire. One of the things we love about our job is how consequential it is. Unfortunately, we were not in work clothes, and Larry managed to snag his  red Christmas shirt on a nail so I guess will be needing to find another one before next Christmas.

Last night, while waiting to board our plane, Carter Jean was being her usual inquisitive self wanting to meet and say “hi” to everyone she could, until she walked up on this man.

He reached out and asked if she wanted to sit with him.
He pulled out his tablet and showed her how to draw with it, they watched cartoons together, and she offered him snacks.

This wasn’t a short little exchange, this was 45 minutes.
Watching them in that moment, I couldn’t help but think, different genders, different races, different generations, and the best of friends.

This is the world I want for her.
In a country that is so deeply divided by beliefs, I want her life to be filled with moments like this... not liberal or conservative republican or democrat, socialist or capitalist, just HUMAN.

Today there was a pretty good thunderstorm in our area and the sewage lift station in Strafford got hit by lightning, blew a hole clear through the back of the meter.Larry was able to quickly get a new meter in place, working with the power company so that everything would keep flowing like it should. It feels good to be able to help our community.

For the next 1 to 2 weeks our company will be doing our part to try to control this COVID-19 virus by sheltering in place. This morning we will be contacting our customers that we are scheduled to work for to let them know. We are just a small two person company and this will definitely affect us financially, but it is the right thing to do. We encourage everyone who is able to do likewise.

It has been awhile since we’ve had a late night service call. Got a text at 12:30 am from a young family who had lost power. Thankful that we were able to find and fix the problem without too much trouble. Now back to bed!

Even though service upgrades are pretty hard work, it is very satisfying to know that you are leaving things much safer, and more convenient. We moved the meter socket to the back of the house and installed a larger panel directly behind it. Then cleaned up this mess of wires. The picture to the right is the new improved version.
