THINGS TO REMEMBER.
🌳​Planting Depth: This is the #1 mistake people make. The root flare (where the trunk widens at the base) must sit at or slightly above the soil line. Deep planting smothers roots and causes trunk rot. ​ 🌳Mulching ("Don't Volcano"): Mulch is great for retaining moisture and regulating temperature, but keep it 2–3 inches away from the trunk. Mounding mulch directly against the bark ("mulch volcanoes") traps moisture and invites insects and fungus. 💧​Watering Strategy: Newly planted trees need deep, slow soakings rather than frequent, shallow sprays. Aim to saturate the root zone 1–2 times a week (depending on rainfall) so the water reaches the lower roots and encourages them to grow downward. 🦌​Deer & Critter Protection: Deer can destroy a young tree in a single night by eating the terminal buds or rubbing their antlers against the trunk.
