We’re still waiting on TCNA approval for the peanut butter mortar and raspberry jam grout system… but for now we’ll stick to the real stuff. 💪🏼

Behind every tile shower are dozens of ANSI standards, TCNA installation methods, waterproofing requirements, substrate specifications, movement joint considerations, mortar coverage requirements, and drainage details that all work together as a complete system.

The demo photos here are from shower replacements less than 8 years old that had already experienced major water intrusion and system failure.

A properly built shower is much more than tile and grout, it’s a fully engineered waterproof assembly designed to perform for decades when executed correctly.

That’s why we place so much emphasis on prep work, waterproofing, and system design long before the finish tile ever goes in.

A lot of what makes a tile shower last never gets seen once the project is finished.

For our shower systems, we use a fortified mud pan combined with both sheet membrane and liquid-applied waterproofing to create a fully sealed system before tile ever goes in.

This approach gives us the flexibility to build fully custom showers in almost any size or layout while maintaining proper slope, drainage, and long-term durability.

There are faster ways to build showers. We just don’t think shortcuts belong behind expensive tile work.

The prep work matters.

This custom shower project was actually a restart after the original installation had major quality issues.

We ended up removing the existing work completely and rebuilding the shower from scratch to make sure everything was done properly — from prep and waterproofing to layout and finish details.

The finished space came together with large format gray tile, classic white subway walls, custom recessed niches, and matte black fixtures for a clean modern look.

Projects like this are a reminder that what’s behind the tile matters just as much as the finished appearance.

We’re excited to start sharing more of our work and process moving forward.
