The Boy Who Swam a Sewage Tunnel for 300 Yards to Pull a Chain, Illinois, 1929
Chicago, Illinois. July 1929. 98°F.

July 12, 3 PM. Storm hit. Combined sewer under the Stockyards backed up. Flooded the yards. 200 men, 1,000 cattle.

Overflow gate was manual. Chain was 300 yards down a 5-foot tunnel. Tunnel was full. Raw sewage. Methane.

If it didn't open, men drowned in 6 feet of sewage.

Eddie Kowalski, 15, was the foreman's kid. 4'11", could swim.

He went in. No light. No air. 300 yards. Swam breaststroke. Sewage in his eyes, mouth, nose.

Hit the wall at 250 yards. Felt for the chain. Found it. Pulled.

Gate opened. He got sucked through. 20 feet. Came up in the river.

Threw up for an hour. Lived.

Yards drained. 200 men lived. 1,000 cattle lived.

He smelled for a month. Boys called him "Sewer." He said: "Better than drowned."

"Gate shut 3 PM. Eddie in 3:01. Swam 300 yards of s**t because 200 men beat 1 boy and air beats sewage. Pulled at 250. Sucked through 20. Up in the river. Yards drained. He smelled a month. They lived forever. Called him Sewer. Better than drowned."

🚧 Flood Alert Issued for Root River Area

The City of Racine Department of Public Works has initiated a Flood Alert for areas along the Root River following recent high-intensity rainfall.

Conditions indicate the potential for flooding, and crews are actively preparing:
• Sandbags have been delivered to select public and private properties
• Domanik Drive is closed in the Lincoln Park area, between the Root River Steelhead Facility and the United Way building

We are closely monitoring river levels and will share updates as conditions change.

What you can do now:
• Avoid flooded or low-lying areas
• Do not drive through standing water
• Stay alert for additional updates and possible road closures

Does anyone remember the old Wind Point Elementary School?

Yesterday, we hydro jetted upstream from the manhole on 4 mile that was originally the lateral for the school. A home nearby is tied into that school lateral and they were having a sewer backup.

After clearing LOTS of wipes and sand, flow was restored and dye was used to confirm.

A huge thank you to Caledonia Sewer Utility for responding and lending a hand!

Key components in a typical bathroom drainage system:
• P-Trap – Holds water to block harmful sewer gases.
• Vent Pipe – Balances air pressure so wastewater flows smoothly.
• Y-Junction – Allows multiple fixtures to connect to the main drain line.
• Pipe Slope – Ensures gravity moves wastewater toward the main sewer line.
• Main Sewer Line – Carries wastewater safely away from the building.

When these elements are installed correctly, the entire plumbing system works quietly and efficiently behind the scenes.
