Cyclospora: What We Know
The recent Cyclospora outbreak is alarming, but it isn't entirely unexpected. Our complex, highly consolidated food system means risks reverberate widely when something goes awry. Opting out can be difficult due to the circuitous path most of this country’s produce follows from the fields to our tables.

Cyclospora is a perfect storm for our highly consolidated food system. Taylor Farms is just one of four grower-shipper-packers that controls 54% of the fresh-cut salad market.

Consolidation increases consumer risk and lack of transparency. As one of our advisors recently pointed out, “Large aggregator supply chains are a black hole of consumer knowledge.” That's why Cornucopia exists, to give you back some of your power in the food system.

Has the cyclospora outbreak affected your vegetable consumption or do you eat only the veggies you can grow? The safest bet- grow your own. Did you know lettuce is one of the easiest things to grow in a vertical garden? If there are vegetables you like to eat but don't like to grow- support your local farmers! While it sounds miserable, it shouldn't stop us from eating veggies. It also shouldn't stop us from supporting local farmers. The lettuce affected was grown in Mexico and only iceburg lettuce. Most important-read labels, check where your produce is coming from! And if fast food calls your name- maybe just skip the lettuce in the summertime. 😬👩‍🌾🥗

What to grow in the heat of summer? It's been hot everywhere and the heat can definitely affect your garden. Peppers can take the heat, but tomatoes may slow down. Vertical growing in our white stacking pots can help take the heat off the roots and give you a better summer harvest. Container gardening using a layer of rice hulls on top can also help keep your growing media cooler. And with our automated systems, you don't have to worry about watering everyday! 💚👩‍🌾
