WHEN SHOULD I START FERTILIZING MY LAWN?

NOT YET!!

Based on research done by the University of Florida, soil temperature plays a vital role in the ability of grass to absorb nitrogen, the main ingredient in spring fertilizer applications.

According to University of Florida research, applying spring fertilizer too early before the temperature of the ground reaches 80° allows much of the nitrogen to travel past the root zone without ever being absorbed and utilized by the grass. It's like dumping three quarters of the bag of fertilizer in the garbage before you ever put it on your lawn!
Since the grass is not able to utilize the the nitrogen, the unused portion then finds its way into our water bodies and ground water-not a good thing!

To ensure all of the nitrogen applied to the lawn is used by the grass and none of it ends up contaminating our natural water resources, wait to fertilize your lawn when the temperatures are well into the 80s. Waiting until late spring to apply fertilizer does not, in anyway hinder the growth of the lawn.

I know the warm weather is getting everybody antsy and wanting to get their grass green but just wait a little longer where almost there! I’d say another 2 weeks but I will be watching the soil temps!
