Etching and staining might look similar at first glance, but they are very different — and knowing the difference helps you understand what your stone needs.
✨ Etching
• Happens when acids (lemon, vinegar, wine) react with the stone
• Leaves dull, chalky, or matte spots
• Feels smooth, but loses shine
• Most common on marble, limestone & travertine
🟫 Staining
• Caused by oils, coffee, food, or pigments absorbing into the stone
• Creates a darker mark or discoloration
• Usually penetrates below the surface
• Happens across all porous stones
