⚠️ The cheapest quote isn’t always the best quote.

This camera system was installed less than a year ago by an unlicensed installer. The exterior wiring wasn’t properly protected, and now the company isn’t answering the customer’s warranty calls.

In South Florida, exposed wiring should be properly secured and protected from weather, damage, and tampering. Now this customer is paying again to have the job done right.

This is what frustrates us most: saving money upfront can sometimes mean paying twice.

I wrote a short guide to diagnosing the most common CCTV problems so you can know what to try before you call for a service visit. Start by asking: what changed recently? A modem swap, power outage, or landscaper can knock systems offline even though cameras keep recording locally.

Quick checks I recommend from the couch: power on the recorder, ensure the network cable is seated, then power-cycle the recorder and wait five minutes. If only one camera is out, suspect the camera, cable, or PoE port. If live view works but playback is missing, check the drive or the recorder’s date/time. And don’t ignore beeping — it’s telling you something.

Stop and call us when the fix requires opening an electrical panel, working at height, or the drive and warranty are in question. If you’re paying for service calls more than once a year, ask about our HDSS Care Plans for extended parts & labor, unlimited remote support, and lower visit rates.

Residents let guests in from their phone, wherever they are. Delivery driver at the gate at 3pm while you're at work? You see them, you talk to them, you buzz them in. Same idea as ButterflyMX, and it works just as clean.

The difference is facial recognition. Residents don't need an app, a fob, or a code to get through their own door. The camera knows them.

Pole-mounted panoramic camera at a community roundabout.

The roundabout is the one spot every vehicle has to pass through, coming in or going out. One camera up high covers the whole thing — you see the vehicle enter, and you see which way it goes.

That last part matters. Once you know the direction, the other cameras on the property pick it up from there. So when something happens at 2am and the board needs answers, we can walk the footage and pull the whole sequence instead of guessing.

Good camera placement isn't about how many you hang. It's about where.

License plate reader install at an HOA community this week.

The entrance had no power anywhere near where the camera needed to go. Running a new circuit out there would have meant trenching, permits, and a lot of the community's money.

So we mounted a solar panel instead.

Pole-mounted LPR, solar powered, capturing every plate coming through the entrance. No trenching, no electrician, no waiting on the power company.

If your community has a spot where you need a camera and there's no power to it, that's usually not a dead end. It just needs a different approach.
