June brings warmer weather, but it also brings heavy summer thunderstorms and sudden downpours.

If your basement relies on a sump pump to stay dry, now is the time to make sure it’s actually working before the next big storm rolls through. A failing pump can lead to a flooded basement in a matter of minutes and cost thousands of dollars in repairs and damages.

Here is a quick, 2-minute test you can run today:

Check the pit: Make sure there is no debris, dirt, or gravel inside the basin that could clog the pump.

The water test: Slowly pour a bucket of water into the pit. The float valve should rise, the pump should turn on automatically, discharge the water quickly, and shut itself off.

Listen to the motor: If it’s making a loud humming or grinding noise but the water isn't moving, the pump needs attention.
