Friendly contractor tip:
The cost of material has almost tripled, I believe it will hold it’s price throughout the summer.
The labor tax has increased.
This is a heavy burden on home owners and contractors. I have always looked at any project as a team effort. Team meaning, all parties work together to accomplish a big win.
This is why it so important for you to do your research online or, word of mouth, to hire a contractor for your next project.

Why hire a lead certified contractor?
Lead is poison! If your home was built prior to 1978, there is a good chance that there is lead present. A lead certified contractor is trained to work safely with this hazardous waste. Yes It costs more. Yes it’s the law. Please, for your families sake, don’t go on the cheap and hire someone who won’t follow lead safety practices. Your children’s health really does depend on your decision.

When should you shovel snow off your roof?
If you have improper insulation or ventilation you will get ice damns. You need to shovel.
The load rating on your roof should be 40lbs. per square foot. That means if you have 12” of wet snow, which weighs from 25-52 lbs. per square foot, you should seriously consider shoveling your roof. Twice the weight for 2 feet of snow.

I would like to share this information to anyone who is thinking about building a new home.
Please read this first, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Building_code -11. Note that building Code was created as the minimum requirement for the industry.
Now I would like you to read this article. https://www.energystar.gov/newhomes?s=mega. Good stuff! Then there is the best home you will ever build. https://www.energy.gov/energysaver/energy-efficient-home-design/passive-solar-home-design
Trust me when I tell you, this is your best investment. Gas, oil, and electric are only getting more expensive. Building a home to “code” nowadays, is just a waste of money. Don’t take my word for it, do the research yourself.

Your friendly contractor tip.
Winter is coming. If you have a drafty home, here are a few things that help you save some money this year. On the cheap.
1. Install window shrink wrap on all windows.
2. Bank snow around your foundation. Shovel it as high as you can against your home. Keep your gas meter clear of snow.
3. If you have a plaster interior home, the temperature should not very within a 10 degree difference, any more than that risks a chance of plaster failure. I don’t recommend a smart thermostat in this scenario.
4. A smart thermostat in a drywall home can lead to huge energy savings.
5. If you’re windows have more than two inches of condensation on the bottom of the glass, run a dehumidifier. As a rule of thumb, two inches is about 40% humidity. Which is about right. Any more than that, is a risk of mold.
6. If your home isn’t tight enough to hold any moisture, like, you can’t even touch anything without getting a shock, use a humidifier to achieve 40-45% humidity in your house. Air feels warmer, and stays warmer at this humidity level.
Good luck my friends. Use these tips to stay warm this winter.
