We design fire pits in Arizona knowing they have to handle extreme heat, sudden rain, and constant use. The part most people never see is the base system underneath, and that’s usually what determines whether a fire pit lasts for years or starts breaking down early.

Underneath the finished surface, we use a layered drainage setup starting with a compact base, followed by decomposed gravel, then silica sand. This helps stabilize the structure while also allowing water to drain properly instead of pooling inside the fire pit. On top, the fire glass finish gives it a clean look while still allowing the system underneath to stay functional in all weather conditions.

A lot of people think artificial turf installation starts when the grass rolls out, but most of the work actually happens underneath. The base preparation is what determines whether the turf looks smooth and professional years from now or develops bumps, dips, and drainage issues down the road.

At this stage, the border is installed and the base is being prepared for final grading and compaction. The crew will wet everything down, compact it properly, and fine-tune the height before the turf goes in. It might not look exciting compared to the finished product, but this is one of the most important parts of the entire process.

The funny thing is, everyone wants to walk through it before it's ready. We get it. Once a project starts taking shape, it's hard not to. One thing we hear all the time from new homeowners is how little landscaping is included by many builders. The driveway and walkway get finished, a handful of plants go in, some gravel gets spread around, and then homeowners are asked to pay a premium if they want anything beyond the basics.

For this project, the homeowner showed us what the builder was charging for a standard front yard package and asked what else could be done within a similar budget. Instead of settling for a few scattered plants, we added turf, installed a paver border that tied into the existing trees and landscaping, planted additional areas around the driveway, and even extended the driveway itself to create a more functional and finished look.

We still like real Bermuda grass when a homeowner wants a yard that feels soft, natural, and comfortable underfoot. It handles Arizona sun better than many lawn varieties, but it still needs the basics done right: proper grading, reliable irrigation, regular mowing, and seasonal care.

A Bermuda grass lawn also changes how a backyard gets used. It gives kids and pets a cooler, more forgiving place to play while adding a clean green contrast to block walls, rock beds, and desert landscaping.
