🧻 “Flushable” wipes? Don’t flush them. Even if the package says flushable, they don’t break down like toilet paper and can cause serious clogs.

🥓 Grease belongs in the trash, not the sink. Fats, oils, and grease cool and harden inside your pipes, catching debris and eventually restricting the drain.

💧 WATER PRESSURE, PRVs & EXPANSION TANKS — WHAT HOMEOWNERS SHOULD KNOW 🔧

Ever wonder why your home needs a pressure reducing valve (PRV) or an expansion tank?

Municipal water pressure can sometimes be much higher than what your home’s plumbing system should handle. A PRV regulates that incoming pressure, helping protect your pipes, fixtures, faucets, toilets, appliances, and water heater.

But here’s where the expansion tank comes in:

💨 Air can be compressed — water essentially can’t.

When water heats up, it expands. In a closed plumbing system, that extra volume needs somewhere to go. An expansion tank contains an air cushion that compresses as the heated water expands, helping control pressure increases.

🔧 What’s an Anode Rod—and Why Does Your Water Heater Need One?

Your water heater is constantly holding dozens of gallons of water inside a steel tank. So what keeps that tank from rusting out? One of the biggest defenses is a simple part called the anode rod.

The anode rod is often called the “sacrificial rod” because it’s designed to corrode instead of your water heater tank.

Over time, the rod gets eaten away by the natural electrochemical reaction happening inside the tank. Once that rod is depleted, corrosion can begin attacking the tank itself—and eventually lead to a leaking water heater.

Have your anode rod inspected periodically, especially if you have hard water, softened water, or aggressive water conditions. Replacing a worn anode rod can help extend the life of your water heater.

🔥 PIPING GAS IN CENTRAL MASS! 🔧

Gas piping is one of those jobs where “good enough” isn’t good enough.

A few Jimmy Pipes Gas Tips every homeowner should know:

🔹 Know where your gas shutoffs are. Appliances should have accessible shutoff valves so the gas can be isolated when servicing or during an emergency.

🔹 Natural gas doesn’t naturally smell like rotten eggs. That recognizable odor comes from an odorant—commonly mercaptan—added so leaks can be detected quickly.

🔹 If you smell gas: Don’t flip switches, light anything, or create a spark. Leave the building immediately and contact your gas utility/fire department from a safe location.

🔹 Carbon monoxide is different from a gas leak. CO is colorless and odorless and can be produced when fuel-burning equipment doesn’t burn or vent properly. That’s why properly installed and maintained CO detectors are so important.

🔹 Gas piping, connections, venting, and appliances should be installed and tested by properly licensed professionals and meet Massachusetts code requirements.

💧 PEX vs. Copper — What’s Running Through Your Walls?

Not all water piping is created equal. Here in Massachusetts, we see plenty of older homes piped with Type M copper, and as it ages, corrosion, water chemistry, and erosion can contribute to those frustrating pinhole leaks—sometimes causing serious damage before you even know there’s a problem.
