Employee Spotlight: Today we would like to highlight one of our Survey Technicians, Hans Kelly! For the past 9 months, Hans has been involved in numerous projects where he wields a GPS and total station to collect data points for the production of our topographic and planimetric maps.

Hans found a passion for the outdoors in his youth beginning with joining The Boy scouts of America where he worked his way all the way up to the rank of Eagle Scout. Hans is a graduate of The University of North Georgia, receiving his BBA in Business Management and Administration in May of 2018. After graduating, Hans took a turn in the direction of his career path where he decided to work in the outdoors. He joined the Idaho Conservation Corps for three months before returning back to Georgia where he picked up working with Moreland Altobelli, which is now known as Atlas Technical Consultants.

Prior to joining Turner Land Surveying in May of 2020, Hans gained experience surveying stormwater structures. Hans takes pride in his job as a Survey Technician where he enjoys doing meaningful work to restore streams and wetland habitats across the beautiful state of North Carolina. Hans is a great asset to our business and we are lucky to have him on the TLS team!

Turner Land Surveying would like to wish the the teams at NASA good luck in their landing of the Perseverance Rover on Mars today! The Entry, Descent, and Landing sequence of the rover is guided by the most accurate maps of Mars ever created.
Turner Land Surveying has their eye on those Martian stream canals and would like to officially submit a bid for the first stream restoration on the Red Planet. 😄

Tune in to watch the land live at NASA; beginning at 2:15 EST.

Happy Presidents' Day! Did you know that many of our U.S. presidents worked as surveyors at some point during their lives?

George Washington - One of America’s most famous (and earliest) land surveyors is George Washington himself. The young future president got his bright start at the age of 17 in 1749. It was not long until he was appointed to be the Surveyor General for Virginia.

Thomas Jefferson - George Washington wasn’t the only president to work as a surveyor. Thomas Jefferson was appointed to work as the Albermarle County surveyor in Virginia in 1773. He also promoted surveying by sending Lewis & Clark on their expedition to explore the land gained through the Louisiana Purchase.

Abraham Lincoln - The nation’s 16th president got his start as a self-educated man in Kentucky. He worked as a storekeeper and postmaster in addition to surveying land and studying law.

Surveyor Spotlight: Today we would like to highlight our office personnel and CAD drafter, Katie Gray. In the past 6 months, Katie has learned a tremendous amount about the field of surveying and how to assist with the drafting process. In the office, Katie uses AutoCAD to draft construction layouts and detailed topographic drawings. She also manages our social media and creates quality content to engage with our audience. 😄

After graduating from Kennesaw State University with a B.S. in biology, Katie began her career in land stewardship by working as a Seasonal Interpretive Ranger for Tennessee State Parks and eventually, the National Park Service. Caring for our wild places gave Katie and appreciation for conservation and she is thrilled to be part of the Turner Land Surveying team working to restore streams and wetlands across the beautiful state of North Carolina!

Thinking Forward Thursday: As we wrap up the week here at Turner Land Surveying, we like to reflect on our big-picture mission: to restore streams and wetlands for the benefit of wildlife and people alike. Conservation comes in many forms and surveying is an important part of not only restoring, but also preserving habitats for generations to come. Our wide variety of projects poses both challenges and opportunities for us to continue to learn and grow in our field. We are grateful each and every day to work alongside the many professionals and passionate people working to improve the natural world!
