With up to 2 inches of heavy rain expected to hit our area, your property's drainage system is about to be put to the test. While a well-designed drainage system is built to handle significant downpours, its effectiveness often comes down to one crucial factor: maintenance.

Built-up grass clippings, impacted dirt, and everyday yard debris can quickly turn a highly efficient water management system into a severe backup hazard.

Before the heaviest rain begins, taking a few minutes to check these critical points can prevent pooling water and potential damage to your home's foundation or landscaping:

1. Gutters and Downspouts
Your roof's first line of defense. Ensure that gutters are completely clear of leaves and debris so water can flow freely into the downspouts. If water spills over the sides of a clogged gutter, it pools directly against your foundation.

2. Pop-up Emitters
These are the green caps in your yard that release water gathered from your downspouts or catch basins.

The Check: Lift the cap manually to ensure the spring or hinge isn't stuck.
The Clear-Out: Remove any turf or grass roots that have overgrown the edges, and clear out dirt or sediment inside the pipe that might stop the cap from popping open under water pressure.

At Rhine Landscaping, we’ve built hundreds of custom outdoor kitchens and grill stations. But far too often, we see the dangers of improper, unqualified installations.

Just last year, we were called to help a homeowner who was severely injured when his built-in gas grill exploded, built by another company, on Mother’s Day. He thought he had lit the grill, went inside to prep food, and returned 10 minutes later to try lighting it again. Because the original masonry structure had absolutely no ventilation, gas had silently built up inside the enclosed cavity until it ignited, throwing him backward against the house.

(Note: We ended up rebuilding his entire setup safely, though his wife understandably vetoed gas and they are now happily using an all-electric unit!)

This is just one of three serious, entirely preventable incidents we've encountered over the last five years. As summer heats up, here are the critical safety facts every homeowner needs to know:

🚨 The Dangers of DIY or Unqualified Installations
Improper Ventilation: As the story above highlights, this is the #1 cause of built-in grill explosions. Without adequate airflow, gas builds up inside enclosed cabinetry.

While we've been enjoying a nice stretch of weather, for the last few days, and following, some areas will have a quick cold snap.

This is critical information for anyone with NEW landscapes: recent plantings are highly vulnerable right now. New trees, shrubs, and perennials haven’t established deep root systems yet, making them susceptible to frost heaving and cell damage, which can stunt their growth or even kill them.

Quick Freeze Protection Tips:

1️⃣ Add Mulch: A fresh 2-3 inch layer of mulch around the base insulates roots against extreme temp shifts. (We can help with this!)
2️⃣ Cover Sensitive Plants: Use burlap, frost blankets, or sheets (avoid plastic touching leaves) overnight.
3️⃣ Hydrate (Carefully): While it seems counterintuitive, moist soil actually holds more heat than dry soil. Ensure new plantings were watered well before the freeze hits.
