Ever wonder why roads get ground down before new asphalt is put down?

This is called milling. It removes the old layer of asphalt and helps get everything ready for the new pavement.

It also helps keep the road at the right height so you’re not just continuously adding more asphalt on top.

If the base underneath is still in good shape, milling and repaving can be a good option without having to tear everything out and start over.

Why can two driveway estimates be so different?

If you've ever gotten multiple paving quotes, you've probably noticed that prices can vary quite a bit.

One contractor might be planning to pave over your existing driveway, while another is including grading, additional stone, base repairs, and more prep work.

The thickness and type of asphalt being installed can also make a difference.

When comparing quotes, make sure you're looking at what's actually included and not just the final price.

Why does drainage matter for your driveway?

Water is one of the biggest things that can cause problems with an asphalt driveway.

If water is sitting on the driveway or getting underneath it, it can weaken the base over time. Once that base starts moving or washing out, you can end up with sinking spots, cracks, and other problems.

That’s why getting the grade right and giving water somewhere to go is such an important part of doing a driveway correctly.

A good driveway isn’t just about the asphalt you see on top. what’s underneath it matters just as much.

Binder vs. Topcoat, what’s the difference?

Binder is the stronger layer underneath. It has bigger stone in it and helps give the driveway its strength.

Topcoat is the smoother layer that goes on top and gives you the finished driveway look.

Basically, binder gives you the strength and topcoat gives you the finish.

But no matter what you use, it all starts with having a good base underneath it.

Why is my driveway sinking in certain spots?

A lot of the time, it’s not the asphalt that’s causing the problem. It’s what’s underneath it.

Water, a bad base, or ground that wasn’t compacted enough can cause certain areas to settle and sink over time.

You can pave over the low spot, but if you don’t fix what’s underneath it, there’s a good chance it’s going to happen again.
