I am pleased to share that Julia Ann Prichard, maiden name Gilbert, has now been repaired and restored alongside her husband, Daniel Smith Prichard, at Phoenix Pioneer Cemetery.

Julia Ann’s headstone had been separated and damaged for quite some time. I had to go on a bit of a scavenger hunt for the transition piece (middle) with one half found buried nearby and the other half leaning against a tree. Thankfully, the top tablet survived this long without breaking. After recovering the pieces, rebuilding the foundation, repairing the break, resetting the stone, and cleaning it, Julia Ann’s monument has been put back together where it belongs.

It is special to see Julia Ann and Daniel resting side by side once again. These projects are about more than stone repair — they help preserve the names, stories, and memory of the people who lived here before us.

I am excited to share the restoration project that began in Phoenix Pioneer Cemetery. A new foundation, repair and multiple cleanings have taken place and Daniel Smith Prichard now stands again, shining a light on the rich history of Phoenix and the men and women who lived here during the Civil War era. Daniel lived in Schroeppel for much of his life, and records show he registered for the Union draft on July 1, 1863. His Civil War draft registration and the 1860 Census both list him as a "Master Boatman," meaning he was likely an experienced canal or river boat operator during a time when New York's waterways were vital to everyday life and trade.
His wife, Julia Ann, is buried next to him , and her headstone restoration will be coming soon! There is still some remaining discoloration but that will continue to lighten with time, but Daniel Smith Prichard is standing again and looking better than ever!

On April 9th, 1978, four brave firefighters lost their lives in an attempt to save the lives of others in a massive fire at 701 University Ave in Syracuse. This Memorial Day we payed our respects by honoring the grave of Michael John Petragnani Sr., one of the firefighters whose life was taken too soon.

We recently gave Foster Jay Converse's headstone a new solid foundation and a thorough cleaning so that his memory stands clear and dignified once again.
Foster proudly served his country as a PFC in the Medical Detachment, 304th Infantry, during both World War I and World War II. After returning home, he raised his family of three kids and worked as a truck driver receiving the "No Accident Driver's Award" in Syracuse. One of his son's, Jay, rests nearby and we will be visiting that soon.
This quiet veteran's life of service, hard work and family continues to be remembered and honored!
