Giving my neighbors a little more blue sky; some chainsaw required. At some point crabapple trees were all the rage on our street- but they do require some maintenance or they end up like this one. Remember that trees are not actually meant to live in tree strips; they need us to take care of them before they send up suckers and form crazy growth habits.

Spring fever makes us forget that bringing home a flat of pansies (“it’s only $10!?”) is a little more like adopting 12 kittens than you may have thought… and that delicious tree you’re about to spend $110 for… think puppy- before potty training. Bare root orders can get the best of you this time of year… crowd source a buddy who will take your extra starts and avoid the guilt of dead starts- sustainable procurement means mindful placement and editing your choices… it’s a challenge but you’re so brave and smart…
