PUTTING TACOMA TO WORK: Tacoma Public Schools is using the funds provided by the community for school construction projects to reinvest in the very people that live and work here – and it’s paying off.

TPS has more than doubled its goal of supporting businesses in Pierce County on major construction projects and met its goal on employing apprentices on those same projects, including the new Hunt Middle School, and Downing, Skyline and Fawcett elementary schools. Those schools were part of the 2020 bond measure to replace or renovate eight aging neighborhood schools.

BLRB had a great time at Trinity Lutheran’s 29th annual Havana Nights-themed auction last Saturday. Jonah Jensen, Amy Vohs, Amy McCarthy Smith, and Heidi Slaybaugh were there to celebrate in style as Trinity Lutheran unveiled their vision for “Boldly Building Our Legacy”. We are proud to be partnered with Trinity Lutheran and Fortis Construction on this exciting phase of development for their campus.

Completed in 2004, the Gig Harbor Civic Center was designed to unite Gig Harbor’s municipal offices and provide much needed space for city staff. The centerpiece of the project was the main two-story building that houses primarily City offices and council chambers, with an open public lobby and a display space for art exhibits. The use of sloping shed roofs, large overhangs, and natural materials, such as masonry, cedar siding and exposed glue laminated trusses, beams and columns, contributed to a contextual design reflective of Gig Harbor’s history and character. The project expressed a commitment to durable public use, linkage to the city’s existing character and heritage, harmony between environment, materials and site design, sensitivity to human interaction and respect for the surrounding neighborhood.

We have been hard at work transforming the office building purchased by Central Christian School, located in Redmond, Oregon, into a school with a fully renovated interior. Community involvement has been a huge part of this project, as the school’s faculty and parents have been working together to get demolition done and salvage materials from other buildings, like reusing carpet from the Redmond Library.

Completed in 2013, Meadow Crest Early Learning Center was designed to support district and community-based early learning programs under one roof, offering a central space for community interaction and family engagement. Classroom groups were organized around interior play courts that encourage creative play, group activities and active learning. Vertical lift doors in each interior play court open onto outdoor play courts and the adjacent inclusive playground, creating connectivity and a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor play spaces. The intimate nature of the wing concept created the feeling of a small school environment within the context of the larger facility, supporting enhanced supervision and classroom management by staff members, and fostering feelings of safety and security in children. Multi-purpose rooms and meeting spaces likewise flexibly accommodate a variety of school functions and group sizes, and interior zoning preserves the security of student areas, allowing for both educational and community use.

Meet Casey Campbell!

Casey grew up in Maple Valley, Washington, and studied architecture at the University of Oregon. He loves to train, compete, and race, specifically in distance running, which he competed in while in college. You can find him out on the trails in Central Oregon running up mountains or training for ultra-marathon trail races. When not working or running, Casey also volunteers with youth in the community: leading a youth group at a local church and coaching youth cross-country and track for Central Oregon Running Klub. “It makes for some busy days, but it’s worth it!”

As an architect, Casey’s passion for architecture is rooted in the position that one has to change the way people live and experience life. “Each and every project is so different, but each one has an opportunity to create a unique solution for both the client and the community who will experience the final project. We have the opportunity to change lives.”

Meet April Elliott!

Born and raised in the Puget Sound, she has always loved the fresh air, clean water, and natural landscape of the Pacific Northwest. April enjoys getting to spend time outside with her pup, Dottie - whether that’s at the dog park, walking nature trails, or camping. “I usually have a podcast or audiobook in my ear too.”

When it comes to her work as a construction administrator, April enjoys seeing the progress that is made from start to finish, the collaboration with subject matter experts, and seeing hundreds of pages turn into a building full of life that serves communities. “My role on the team allows me to blend my curious nature and my ability to connect people with a focus on constructable solutions.”

The design of Gresham High School encompassed selective demolition, modernization and the integration of more than 200,000 SF of new learning space, a gymnasium, performing arts center and common use areas. Primary project goals included provision of a safe, secure learning environment, healthy, student-centered interior environments and the provision of shared-use gathering and event spaces for both scholastic and community events. Architectural elements of the historic school were removed from the existing building and repurposed throughout to honor historic legacy and celebrate community character. The new performing arts center and its prominent facade is a distinguishing element of the transformation, creating a new signature entry into the City of Gresham.
