Community Compost

Community Compost A soil supporting, farm friendly, community centered composting service provider! More info at www.

Community Compost is a new service in the Rogue Valley, providing affordable pick-up of compostable food scraps from residential homes. Instead of unused food scraps accumulating in our land-fills, we collect them, and bring them to a local organic farm, where the materials are cultivated into re-usable compost, and eventually re-introduced to the soil. By providing this service, Community Compost

reduces your footprint on our local environment, and harnesses the energy of your food scraps for the nourishment of the soil on our local farms. This energy helps grow the delicious organic foods produced and consumed here in the Rogue Valley. Community Compost connects you to your local food source, so you can be an important part of the sustainable agricultural practices in our region.

It's compost drop-off day at the Tuesday Rogue Valley Growers & Crafters Market! šŸ

Swing by ScienceWorks every Tuesday between 8:30am and 1:30pm and bring your food scraps to fill the bins.

These ā€œblack goldā€ scraps are donated to local farms where they're used to enrich the soil. It’s good for the climate, too! When food waste is dumped in landfills and sealed off from oxygen, methane, aka ā€œnatural gasā€ is created.

Let’s do our part to keep food scraps out of the garbage!

A special thanks to:
🌟 Ashland Food Co-op for sponsoring

🌟 Community Compost for delivering scraps to farms

🌟 Flavia Franco of Southern Oregon Food Solutions for greeting people and tending to the bins

🌟 ScienceWorks Hands-On Museum for hosting the Growers Market

🌟 The Rogue Valley Growers Market for organizing this wonderful community gathering!!!

Please check out this article. Food waste is really an important issue. And check out the take aways that I think are important. I like that a guy who has done enough research on the issue to write a 300 page book can say: ā€œIt does give me a lot of comfort that incredibly smart people are working on this, it’s hard to not be optimistic when you see people dedicating their lives to fixing these problems,ā€ Grunwald said.

Take Aways:
This article is thought provoking. What solutions resonated with me? Two things: that farmers figure out how to grow more food on smaller spaces. Not factory farm models, but lessons taken from Japan, where they make the most of the acres they have. To do that, they need very rich soil, not more chemicals. So yes, composting can play a big role. The other thing is we need to waste less food, and to do that we need more public engagement and public awareness. If we hit obstacles on reducing dependence on fossil fuels, we can still make progress in the fight against climate change if we focus on food.

Author Michael Grunwald reckons with the challenge of food-based climate emissions in his new book We Are Eating the Earth
