Florida A&M University (FAMU) College of Law student Edward Lavant was recently appointed as a certified county mediator by the Florida Supreme Court.
Lavant was made aware of the mediator opportunity through his participation in FAMU Law’s Mediation Clinic. As a certified mediator, Lavant will guide adversarial parties to resolve disputes through a voluntary and confidential process. During the process, each party discusses their issues and possible solutions, which allows them to take control of the disagreement before going to trial.
“The purpose of our clinic program is to expand students’ legal education from learning the rules of the law to learning to practice law, by providing real-life, practical lawyering skills and experiences,” said Mark Dorosin, director of Legal Clinics and Field Placements. “Lavant and his colleagues in the Mediation Clinic have embraced this experiential opportunity, and through the clinic all will become certified county court mediators, a credential that will be invaluable as they begin their journey as lawyers.”
Lavant is extremely active at FAMU Law. The third-year student from Jacksonville, Florida is also an Office of Admissions ambassador, an associate justice on the Law School Circuit Court, the president of the Cherry Chapter of Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity, International, the secretary of the Armed Forces Student Organization, the class representative for the Student Division of the Federal Bar Association, and a member of the National Black Law Students Association.
Lavant earned his Bachelor of Science degree in political science with a minor in law enforcement intelligence from Florida State University.
In his spare time, Lavant enjoys watching shows and movies, taking cruises and traveling the world. He has been to seven countries outside of the United States and plans to visit many more!
