Are you a college student seeking a degree in the architecture or interior design? Are you looking to further your career this summer? The RGA Companies offer limited internships in design, forensics, restoration and redevelopment services. These are open to college Juniors as well as to post graduates that involve fulltime mentorships with senior staff and the founder Dr. William Henry. These programs feature a diverse experience including programming, design, preparation of construction documents as well as construction administration. Interns are encouraged to spend most time with experienced staff located in our offices near the vibrant historic Hyde Park district, one block from Bayshore Boulevard within walking distance of downtown Tampa and the University of Tampa. RGA Design LLC is not just your average architecture firm. Yes, we do offer commercial architecture services across the state of Florida, however, we also engage in the formation of development teams to pursue public, private partnerships ‘3P’. The comparable experience is a result of the firm’s involvement in the development and design of multiple private land use types and mixed-use developments as well as the long term individual experience ‘IE” governmental service of the founder William Henry PhD as a former Chairman of the Hillsborough County City of Tampa Planning Commission ‘HCCPC’ and Industrial Development Authority ‘IDA’ and member of the Housing Finance Authority ‘HFA’.

In the past, RGA was the proposed ‘master developer’ led mixed-use development team that finished 3rd on the 3 billion dollar Tropicana Field RFP and 3rd on the 500 million dollar West River Development RFP. Team members included Brennan Development based in Chicago, The Ryan Companies, Invictus Development, Blue Sky Development and Onicx/ Dr. Kiren Patel.

The RGA Companies offer limited internships in design, forensics, restoration and redevelopment services. These are open to college Juniors for summer programs as well as to post graduates that involve fulltime mentorships with senior staff and the founder Dr. William Henry. These programs feature a diverse experience including programming, design, preparation of construction documents as well as construction administration. Most notably the intern and recent graduate experience the full range of professional experience as well as client contact and hands on, assistant project management experiences.

Project types may include commercial, educational and restoration as a response to natural disasters. Urban redevelopment projects are also regularly undertaken by the firm during the intern’s term. These have included public private partnerships ‘3P’ as well as transit-oriented developments ‘TOD’ in partnership with national firms. Entertainment design of exhibits at the Florida Aquarium and Lowry Park Zoo are recent projects.

Interns are encouraged to spend most time with experienced staff located in our offices near the vibrant historic Hyde Park district, one block from Bayshore Boulevard within walking distance of downtown Tampa and the University of Tampa. We encourage a blend of work and life style experience. We have many reviews by successful current and past interns that attest to their experience with RGA and how it played a pivotal positive role in both their career and early life experiences.

Over the years, tread surfaces can become worn, and though imperceptible at eye level, could cause there to be dips in the stair treads that result in deviations in stair riser uniformity. According to the National Fire Protection Association ‘NFPA’, fire exit stairway risers and treads should be uniform and not deviate any more than 3/16th of an inch from the one below or above it (NFPA 7.2.2.3.6.1).

Also, these wear patterns could cause excessive slopes of more than 1 in 48, or roughly two percent. This is also a code violation.

Although 3/16th of an inch and slopes exceeding 2% on stair treads may not seem like a lot, these deficiencies can lead to loss of balance and stairway accidents.

In one case we had recently at a large sports venue, this venue had a similar issue. What we thought was a simple slip and fall, was really a dimensional uniformity and slope issue. A patron of the sports game had spilled a drink on an egress stair, yet while the incident step wasn’t overly slippery when wet (as gleaned from a coefficient of friction test later on), the step bore a tread with a 6.3% slope and a riser that deviated 1/4” from the previous step. These findings ultimately were the crux of our report. Sustaining dimensional uniformity is important.

I am saddened to inform of the passing of architect and Former County Commissioner Joe Chillura.

In the 1990’s RGA Design assumed the architectural practice and on-going work of Chillura and Associates after his election to the Hillsborough County Board of County Commission.

Joe was a friend and colleague. He brought an architect’s vision and creativity to local politics. Joe spearheaded the Community Investment Tax ‘CIT’ which paid for many road and school improvements along with Raymond James Stadium.

Without Joe and the critical funding of Raymond James Stadium it is likely that the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers football team would have relocated and playing in Baltimore. For this and other pioneering legislation, the Board of County Commissioners voted to name the courthouse area park after Joseph Chillura Jr.
