š VAST LANDSCAPE TIP: DONāT WAIT UNTIL SPRING
October is a great time to start preparing your Texas Hill Country landscape for cooler weather ā but winter prep doesnāt mean cutting everything back!
Hereās what homeowners should be thinking about now:
šæ Plant for next year. Fall is one of the best times to add Texas native plants, shrubs and trees. Cooler temperatures give roots time to establish without battling our intense summer heat.
š§ Adjust your irrigation. As temperatures cool and warm-season lawns slow down, they generally need less supplemental water. Check your system for leaks, broken heads and unnecessary watering.
š Donāt over-clean your beds. Some fallen leaves, dormant native growth and seed heads provide valuable winter protection and habitat. A perfectly ācleanā bed isnāt always the healthiest bed.
āļø Be smart about pruning. Remove dead, damaged or hazardous limbs as needed, but avoid automatically giving every plant a heavy fall haircut. Different plants require different pruning schedules.
š± Protect the soil. Refresh mulch where needed to help conserve moisture, moderate soil temperatures and protect plant roots.
šŖØ Check drainage now. Look for low spots, erosion, standing water, clogged drainage areas and displaced rock before winter rains make small problems bigger.
Good spring landscapes start with smart fall planning.
