Funny how a newly built home in Morgan hill with a double back entry French 10’ tall $6000.00 doors passed inspection when the bottom door bolt would not even enter the threashold due to the doors frame being too large to properly enter the jamb. Equally amazing how a true handyman can fix the problem that has annoyed the owners for ten years in just five minutes.

I’m always amazed how much big box companies can charge then send out incompetent people (or knowledgeable people with no sense of decency) that can do subpar or cheap work in an industry that can really effect you - your family and friends - your pets and everything in your
homes health in so many ways. This young mother of three littles a dog and two cats mother in law purchased a home that had the carpet replaced by the seller (not sure by which big box company or how many owners prior) who put the new tack strips in so close to the raised baseboards that the carpet could not go inbetween in some places and was bearly catching the backing in others which means it was not able to get a proper stretch, which means the carpet is going to fail prematurely- be harder and harder to keep clean - be subject to increased matting and static electrical charges and fall apart ten times faster than a professionally installed job. So the mother-in law (after feeling the main entryway and hallway (as well as the walkway to the kitchen) was just too filthy to handle anymore) she hired a big box company to install a really good quality solid hand scr***d wood laminate in those areas. But they are not training real flooring guys anymore to install laminate- the industry does not (if it ever did) care about you - your home - or your health and safety. if it did it would not hire illegals - pay less than minimum wage to crews who hire criminals and drug addicts and pay thier bosses to drive them to your home. And as the only person on record in some big box companies is the foreman or license holder that is paid per sq ft, who then pays his guys (some of which were just hired off the street for the day) who may have never worked with thier hands or a razor blade knife, much less someone who knows all the nuances of all the specialty tools used in the flooring business like a wall trimmer (which needs at minimum an 1/8ā€ of space between the tack strip and any other surface to cut the material evenly and make a really smooth looking edge that is perfectly tucked in so it cannot pull back over time and become loose) so it should be no surprise that some part time worker who now got his hands on very sharp razors is hanging out at the public parks causing trouble. Or that when they cut the carpet along the walls or at the transition edge where the carpet meets the laminate (known as the transition) it was not properly tucked or even stretched in so that the carpet could be vacuumed. Hell they didn’t even know how to install the laminate properly, as the edge where normally a formed transition piece would go over the edge to hold it down (as it is a floating floor) was left bare with jagged cuts where the carpet was just butted up to and sloppily tucked down. This is very strange (if not done on purpose) because they installed the laminate on a diagonal pattern which is usually only given out by the dispatcher to thier best seasoned and knowledgeable crews to do as it can be very technical and challenging to even a seasoned professional. So this carpet aside from being soo loose I could pull it up with two fingers three inches (it shouldn’t even lift 1/4ā€ (if power stretched to manufacturer specs) off the padding and should snap back not float back down) but it was very matted after a short time completely filled with dirt underneath the padding, which means thier will be dips and valleys eventually and soon as well. But the backing of the carpet especially at the edges is now falling apart and starting to Frey and delaminate. Ok so I fixed all of these issues in just two hours so she could sell it and move to a bigger place, but the damage to the materials in her home and her children’s health has already been done. She has no idea how much the micro dust and captured bacteria from loose matted carpeting has caused her or her family. She had probably just thought she was a bad mom or poor housewife for years thinking it was her fault she could never get or keep anything clean. She - nor her husband has had company stay over or had coworkers that think much or them as it appears they live in squaller due to all the dust - scratches in furniture- stains everywhere-stale air and general stale atmosphere that just these few nuances of the trade has reduced her surroundings to. And because of the continuing lack of accountability or training of the work force (with the help of products that will look ok no matter how poorly installed - inspectors that are not required and do not even try to get paid to judge the workmanship or quality of the product or its installation (JUST IF IT PASSES CODE) not even if it is safe, that this type of injustice is causing more confusion- more hurt employees and companies to where no one even seems to care or know how to correct the issue. It seams were just dividing into two continents. One that knows and gets things done right and ones that don’t know and get screwed or walked on by that industry. It’s become so prevalent that outsiders are coming here and learning how to cheat people in all the different trade and service industries. So we the consumer in this country will need to study and learn the intricate details of everything to get a fair job done or get r***d by those who know they can get away with it! This is another reason I have increased the popularity of the term handyman in that this is just not something I can do. I can educate you (the customer) while simultaneously locating every issue in your home and making the right corrections in less time than the supposed professionals took to do it wrong. But thier are so many liars or fakers trying to ape what I can do they are even starting to clone the way I look. Someday I will figure out a new term or name for what I do so that you the public will be able to distinguish between the knowledgeable professional services and individuals and the crooks or still learning servers in the home repair and service industries.

Matching drywall texture can be a challenge, especially when the original style was not done properly. This ceiling was repaired incorrectly, then retextured wrong (using a spray can instead of a hopper machine) by the way you cannot properly match knockdown from a hopper gun using a spray can unless you plan to come back another day and isn’t using the can to shorten the time on the job? Lol. But if you have incredible skills and know your product matching a bad texture is possible to not only do but you can make it less noticeable.

Ok, so you have a weird looking area on your ceiling- behind the edges of some crown molding- some strange looking texture of paint issues. It’s hard to detect if it was from a repair (since nothing was disclosed) job that is just not perfect or if thier is a new problem that has occurred since the facelift of new paint. I can tell you that in most cases i have been called out to it was either a poor repair job (bad texture match or one coat paint work ) or the repair of the leak was not tested and not properly repair in the first place so now it is leaking again under the new paint. First let me state that the only thing keeping water out of your home is tar covered paper (on the roof) and tar covered paper (behind the wood siding or stucco. On some houses it may be plastic covered tyvek paper or foil covered styrofoam. Then on the roof you have pvc vent pipes (which are connected to your drain lines in the wall to allow air in to let water drain down without gurgling) that have a metal flashing with a rubber gasket that fits tight around the pipe and overlaid the paper by several inches. In this state they place a secondary one that one end goes over a row of roofing tiles so the water run off cannot bombard the seal in one location while diverting some of that water away. When the roofers are finished with the tiles and are installing the cement caps or applying paint to the caps and vent pipes they also put a good America of wet tar around the vent pipes at the gasket area to further prevent water from seeping in. As in all cases water finds the easiest and lowest point so if water dies get past the paper on a roof it will travel downwards (following a slope or bend) until falls off or down by gravity then hits the next thing. Doesn’t matter if it’s some insulation- a framing board or block- wire or pipe or drywall. So if water can travel over the cement roofing tiles, get past the flashing and through two rubber seals coated with tar it is now going to run down the side of the pvc until it either makes an elbo (usually a 90 or 45 that it can’t follow and stops off or it will flow onto something else it comes into contact with like the edge of a piece of framing ir block of wood - some insulation or drywall. In this last home the vent pipe made a couple of 33* turns then a sharp 45 in the plumbing wall of the whirlpool bath tub in the upstairs master bathroom. Which happened to be right above the crown molding between the sliding glass door and bay window in the living room ceiling of the first floor. The only evidence of any possible problem was the minute crack in the ceiling combined with some odd texture Just below it under the edges of the crown molding. Now the inspection report cliamed a repair was made but did not specify if the leak was resolved ( but you would assume it was fixed right?) well not any more these days. You see the inspector knew something was done repair wise as you could see clear silicone wax placed around the vent pipe where the flashing gasket met and you could tell where the texture in the ceiling and wall was off as the repair company did not do a professional job. So the buyer called me out to check and sure enough (without even having to do a water test) I could tell that the water was still getting in past the flashing and running down to the plywood floor in the closet of the master bathroom then dropping onto the insulation in the ceiling below until it reached the wall then ran down the blocking until it saturated the drywall behind the crown molding and was bubbling up the paint and creating a crack in the ceiling plaster. Upon removal of the loose paint you could see the square of drywall someone had cut out to find the leak prior that was just screwed back in place without any thought or intelligence. That piece of drywall was now so coated with black mold it had spread out several inches past the patched square. Fortunately they did not cut to the joists (like your supposed to do) and once a proper opening was cut to the joists all the moldy drywall was gone. The reason the repair did not work is one silicone does not hold up on a roof especially if you do not clean the materials prior and you use a cheep product that does not deflect uv light. Second if you do not apply new sealer to both flashing gaskets you are missing half of the problem which this company did not do so in reality they didn’t even do a proper inspection because if you do not check the paper and the plywood underneath you can’t possibly know if you caught everything or have a bigger issue like dry rot or mold starting to form in the deck or framing. Then lastly they did not do a flood of water test because if they had it would have been obvious the repair was still leaking. And finally they reused dirty moldy drywall that would have continued to grow mold spores even if no more moisture would have been present. For some who may not know, you cannot remove or kill mold from a porous surface like drywall which is why it must be replaced. I was glad this home buyer had the sense to investigate something they thought was fishy about thier new home and had the intelligence and foresight to understand my evaluation and method of repair. I keep trying to educate the public about this type of condition and why only certain people should ever attempt this type of repair as it takes the knowledge of several disciplines from many trades other than just roofing. Every ā€œroofingā€ contractor they had look at it wanted to replace the whole roof. That’s a pretty big expense to lay on a new home purchaser. Especially when it can be practically and correctly repaired by someone with the right knowledge. Yes there was another area that also needed repairing and yes the original roofing installation was sub par and maybe should get a new paper job done eventually to ensure no other damage can occur but these two little repairs will give them another five to ten years without any problems, and that’s a comfort I’m sure.

Well now, it’s 2020 and I don’t have my flying car, I don’t have a robot friend or a Star Trek transporter but I think we can and should be building homes with Star Trek doors. It’s bad enough that we have paint designed to stick to a paint paint brush but nothing else but we could be making homes more secure with entryways that cannot be broken down instead of these swinging wood slabs that are only held in place by a thin metal hinge with tiny screws on one side and a 1/2ā€ thick piece of wood with a short metal bar bearly 1&1/2ā€ long above another 3/4ā€ thick bar (which is shaved in half on one side to help it recess like a turtles head that is connected (by plastic pieces and a spring) to a k**b that can be gone around with a plastic credit card - a small thin piece of metal or a good kick. The whole idea of a doorway is nonsense really. We should be able to develope force field type entry’s or at minimum an automatic sliding door that is thin enough to be lightweight- large enough to be secure on all sides so it cannot be manipulated on any side or end - it recesses into the wall so no need to have swing clearances and made out of an unbreakable material that cannot be cracked or bent. This would solve so many issues especially in the crime world but I’m betting this is a police issue as it seams gaining entrance into your home just like government reach into your lives is the reason for this delay in modernization. I guess I’ll have to invent this too. Anyone want to get in on the ground floor?
